Latest version is DirectX 9, and it can be downloaded from here:

Honestly DX9 is still buggy, and no game to date even uses DX9 technology. I'd stick with the DX8.1 built into Windows XP since it is stable and less buggy than DX9. Most likely, you won't even NEED DX9 for quite a long time. I'd wait until DX9 SP1 or DX9.1 is out to avoid massive game play problems in XP.

I'd concur that your advice is excellent ... if the final version DirectX 9.0 is actually buggy. Personally, though, I've been running it with WinXP Pro w/nVidia 41.09 driver since the release, and in combination with several games, and I have not yet seen a single glitch.

Perhaps some of the complaints are due to use with specific applications or games, or because of users who have downloaded beta versions, or even updated to the final version over the top of a previously installed beta?

Of course, the hardware I'm running can't take advantage of anything beyond the 8.1 features, but installing 9.0 doesn't seem to have caused any problem on my systems. However, I have seen a few people with ATI cards complaining of games crashing to the desktop, even if they have a Radeon 9700.

Interesting, hmm?

Comments and/or extra info, or links?
