Help--How to Get Back to, or Restore, a Game in OS X

I recently bought an upgrade card for my Mac, and it isn't as stable as it
used to be. The upshot is I had a freeze up while playing Nethack (along
with 7 other programs), and now when I try to start the game, I get the
following message:

There is already a game in progress under your name. Destroy old game? [yn]

I've searched on the web and found a things that look similar, but not with
directions about what to do. I know just the bare minimum of UNIX, but am
running it under terminal, b/c I just liked it better than the carbon. I've
seen a comment that said something like the socket would time out, but
without any idea of how long that might take. I've been doing this for a
couple of days, and it hasn't happened yet. I've also seen references to
people being able to restore or rebuild these games, and of ways to save a
backup of a game. That would be preferable to what I'm going through now.
It seems like the game is running, and I ought to be able to get to it --
or is that a misleading message? Any help with this would be appreciated.

What happens if you press 'n'?

This happened to me and I just changed my name. Not the most elegant
solution but it worked.

1- Copy your entire nethack directory, so that you're working from a
backup.
2- Use the "recover" program included with nethack. There should be
documentation with it. This should take all your level files and
re-assemble them into a savegame file. You'll lose everything that
happened since you last entered the current level, but that isn't
usually too much.
