P4 2.4 starting to slow down?

Almost 3 months ago I bought the then dream machine P4 2.4, 512DDRAM, 40gig 7200HDD with GeForce 4 Ti4600.

It purred and still continues to in a way. Although I have noticed that software reaction times are slowing. Programs can take up to 10 seconds longer to load and also now when I am in games such as Ghost Recon Island Thunder or Prisoner Of War, a quick turn around with the mouse isn't as smooth sometimes resulting in my death.

My question is, is there a program that will help me isolate a resource hog, besides Task Manager. I want to find out where this new problem is. I have recently installed quite a few programs and games so it's a little hard to tell if one of them did it.

Also, I have partitioned my HDD from the beginning into 2 10gigs and one 20. I have about 12Gig left total, could this be slowing me down?

If I can't find the problem I am going to have to do reformat so I can get my old boy back.

Sorry this is a long post, took me a while to say what I wanted really.

Actually, Windows 2000 and XP have a known 6 month "performance" life. After about 6 months or so, the performance of the system degrads. Remember when you would first install Win 98? It ran so fast and generally stable, even after you added all your junk. After a month or so though the system started to lag and freeze, well this still happens with the NT environment, but it takes much longer. Basically the registry fills up with tons of bad code, the file system frags up, etc.

The only way to "Cure" your system of this is to either have an effective registry cleaning program and aggressively maintain your drive or simply backup all your junk and reformat the system and start over.

Those links have to do with optimizing configuration, cleaning your hard drive and registry, and checking startup programs. I hope you can go through those and see if they'll help.

Personally, running through these things, in addition to making sure not to install beta and/or unstable programs, will definitely help. Also imaging your system after you've clean installed Windows, drivers, and programs with Drive Image or Norton Ghost will help save lots of time if you ever mess up your system. <A HREF="http://forums.btvillarin.com/viewtopic.php?t=184" target="_new">Imaging FAQ</A>

There was once a guy who posted here a link to a place where it had lots of registry editing tricks and tweaks plus many tips to maintain WinXP performance. One of the registry editing tricks was for the shutdown speedup and better RAM handling.
Do you remember the website?
I recall Toejam replied inside.

Hmm...I'm not sure. You can look through my site (<A HREF="http://www.btvillarin.com/windows/" target="_new">Windows section</A>) and see if something might help. In regards to better RAM handling, you can check out <A HREF="http://www.outertech.com" target="_new">Cacheman</A>.

Am I glad I have never come across thiese problems: I usually re-install Win XP Pro every three to four weeks. I think my record is about six weeks. I don't really understand how hardcore overclockers can last without reinstalling XP for so long, unless I am not talking to Hard Core overclockers here, though I have to say I am not an overclocker, I don't even have a PC anymore since I burned my CPU and bord!!
