YANI: underage drinking

If a too-young character drinks booze, the Kops appear, and the
character either pays a fine or is fitted with a ball and chain. If a
shopkeeper sells him the booze, the shopkeeper loses his sales license
and his store is subject to looting or permanent closure.

In the U.S. the Feds have harmonized the states' drinking ages at 21. I
believe some parts of Europe have a lower age, something like 6. Or
maybe that's just France, which by government fiat we are no longer
allowed to care about. So I'm not sure what would be an appropriate age
(level/turns) at which a NetHack character is no longer a minor.

As a related idea: If any character eats a violet fungus or yellow mold
within eyeshot of a Kop or watchman, the fine and/or ball-n-chain
applies. If the character has too much violet fungus or yellow mold in
his inventory, he may be deported to another part of the dungeon.

Yes, I think 16 in France and Germany, but I can't be completly sure of
that. If not, it would be 18 and certainly not 21 like in the US.

And I think it mainly concerns selling and not drinking (that is you can
drink at home, there should be no problem).

Whereas France is much more prohibitionist concerning 'soft drug' and, eg,
smoking cannabis is prohibited.

But in other countries (Netherland come to mind, of course), consumation
of these 'soft drug' is not prohibited, and even selling is allowed iirc
(someone will correct me on this...) And some other countries are much
more tolerant and even if consomation is theoritically prohibited, it is
technically allowed and only selling if punished (Switzerland seems to
fall into this category).

(And, of, cours, i don't metion the pathological case of Christiana's free
state...)

Hypocoristiquement,
Jym.

In Germany, legal _buying_ age is 16 for non-distilled alcohol (i.e.
beer and wine) and 18 for beverages containing distilled alcohol (note
that there is no restriction on the percentage of alcohol; although wine
and beer have a natural limit through the process of fermentation, you
are not allowed to buy alcoholic beverages with an equivalent percentage
if they are just diluted booze). So 18 would be the best approximation
for nethack 'booze'.

Consult your copy of 'Pulp Fiction' for a discussion on the rights in
the netherlands (I think it is still accurate, but I may be wrong).

To be very exact, people under 16 *can* buy beer and wine if
they're accompanied by a legal guardian (e.g., a parent of theirs).
However, virtually all parents I know have quite clear opinions
about drinking before $certain_age, with the value of $certain_age
varying, but satisfying $certain_age >= 16 in almost all cases;
hence this addendum is of a quite theoretical nature.

I still don't understand how you could determine the 'age' of
a character in nethack, anyhow.

Best,
Jakob

Yes, it should use some other milestone in use by NetHack. Another
choice might possibly be lvl 14, since that's the milestone for the quest.

As a related YANI, how about booze affects you less and less the more
you drank (as your body gets a tolerance) but more and more the older
you get (as your body can't handle it as easily)? So if you drink booze
the first time at lvl 30, it knocks you out for a long time.

In the Netherlands are the following rules:

Alcohol in the form of beer and wine is prohibited for sale to minors i.e.
under 16, liquor for above 18. Tabaco is also limited to those over 16.
Softdrugs can semi-legally be bought by people over 18, but they need to
identify themselves before entering the shop. Having a shop and sell
soft-drugs does impart a shop-inventory with a limited amount of
trade-ware, and each buyer may buy only a small amount each time.

Hard-drugs are strictly forbidden, but there are a number of ways to get
them, all illegal off-course, if you know the right persons.

I like the idea of getting caught when drinking booze or eating
hallucination-inducing edibles. The punishment can be very tough,
especially when you are not in a good standing with your God. Maybe also a
punishment by angering your God can be implemented also, this because
nearly all religions abhore overindulgence.

The age is 19 in Ontario, Canada. Which is odd as the voting age is
18...

They did it that way so at least some of the people voting will be
sober. :)

Of course, the age required to be a candidate will be 21...

Naturally, because no sober, rational adult would run for office. :)
