Pets and their abilities

I've been reading about on Steelypips.org about the monsters
information, and I was curious about normal monsters that you can
saddle and ride, or just "tame" and keep as pets...

My question is this: Can you feed them corpses and give them
intrinsics, such as fire protection, et al, and can you throw potions
of gain ability/level at them and actually have it -work-? I know you
can throw potions/zap wands of/cast spells of healing/extra
healing/full healing at them, and they work, at least the healing part
does. Or are they stuck with fixed level + stats, with intrinsics only
being modified when the monster does something appropriate (ie, quaff a
potion of invisibility or speed), or a level/stat going down when
struck with spells/weapons that affect those (ie, Stormbringer).

Thanks in advance!

Yes, but just think of all those kittens and small dogs that got
transformed into Trolls, &alrogs and Liches.

Try the pet spoilers on Eva Myers' page (there is a link from steelypips
to there) to have more information.

IIRC, thrown/wielded potions of *healing and gain level will act in teh
same way (heal). Pets gain HPs and levels by kill, eating wraith corpses
and rinking poition of gain level (for those pet that can drink potions).
Pets do have maximum reachable level.
I do not think pet can gain intrisics but I would not bet anything on
that.

Hypocoristiquement,
Jym.

No. The only corpses that affect monsters are shapechangers (polymorph),
nurses (heal) and wraiths (gain level).

gain ability heals them, gain level has no effect (see port1-341.txt)

they gain levels by killing things, eating wraiths and quaffing !oGL.
For the killing there is a maximum level of 1.5 times base level; ton't
know about the rest. Anyway monsters don't have player-like stats, only
HP, speed, level and magic resistance.

As usual in nethack, one easily finds more examples. I
bend over in agony each time a good pets eats a chamaeleon
corpse.

Kittens and small dogs rarely have the pleasure of a chameleon
feast. And it's spelled lichens ;-).

Best,
