Hearse Question

Ok, how does this work?

About a month ago I downloaded and ran Hearse.
Uploaded 4 bones got 5 back. The program hasn't worked
since. I run it, but nothing happens. Looking at my files
it looks like I have 1 of the bones that I downloaded. Is
that why it doesn't work?

How often does everyone run it ?
The Hearse site says everytime you get a bones file.
I've been trying to get it to work about once a week
(every sunday).

It will only do an exchange if you have bones files that you have not
uploaded before. So what it sounds like is that you have used all but one
of the bones files that you got before, but have not generated any new ones
yet. I check my bones folder after every death that may have generated a
bones (i.e. deeper than level 3, not on the Castle, etc). If I have any
files that are brand new, I run the Hearse program and it does the
exchange.

You can run Hearse as often as you like - if there are no new bones
since the last run then it doesn't even contact the server (unless your
last upload attempt was aborted for some reason, that is).

One thing I find a little odd about hearse, which Ive just started
using, is that I have both nethack and slashem on my computer, I ran
hearse on my nethack folder, and it worked fine, then tried it on my
slashem folder, and it said there were no new files to upload (when
there are heaps). Not realyl a huge problem, but a small one none the
less

Can this be worked around by (in my case) editing the original slashem
bones files (but not changing them) so that the date last modified is
after the nethack bones upload?

OK, let's take this to email and we'll see if we can figure out what's
happening. Can't find anyone registered with your email address on
Hearse, which isn't a good start :)

Yeah, I'm afraid the Hearse client is a bit dim when it comes to
multiple NH installs. It's OK if you play mostly one for a bit, then
mostly the other, but since it only records one date-last-uploaded, it
will end up missing some files if you switch between the two on a game-
by-game basis. (And when you're first uploading your cache of files,
obviously).

I plan to move that sort of thing into a config file at some point in
the future, as soon as I get some spare time.

You *could* run touch or some similar utility on them.

An easier workaround:

1. Set system clock to something relatively ancient, e.g. 1/1/2000
2. Run "hearse /r" - this will reset the last-uploaded-date to now and
exit immediately without doing any work
3. Set system clock back to today's date
4. Run Hearse again from your Slashem directory to upload your bones
files

That'll only have to be done once so you can upload your backlog of
Slashem files. The only other thing you need to do is to remember to
run Hearse after playing a game in any of your NH installs that creates
a bones file (or, more simply, just run Hearse after every NH game).
That'll make sure the different games don't get out of sync.

This is obviously far from ideal, and I will be addressing this when I
have some free time over the summer. An overhaul of some of the minor
niggles in the client is long overdue.

Cheers,

Er, OK. Let's take this to email and we'll see if we can work it out.
I already emailed you on your Earthlink account but I'll forward that to
your Optonline one.
