retail amd fan sufficient?

Is the heavy duty heat sink and fan that comes with an retail amd athlon 1.4 ghz sufficient enough to not harm the chip?

Of course. But people recommend a better one if you are going to overclock it.

I recently got the 1.4GHz (Retail) and the startup temp is around 54 and I have seen it as high as 59 in a warm room. I have a good tower and I am not exactly thrilled with these numbers, but without overclocking or a better cooling system they should be ok.
