[s] monks and wands of draining

How do you usually protect your monks from wands of draining in slash'em ?

The only way to do so, iirc, are amulet and DSM. But DSM is not a very
good idea for monks (especially in ) and amulet slot is here for
reflection (which can also be provided by DSM, shield or wielded weapon,
all rathe rbad ideas for monks).

And you usually don't know which precise monster will carry a wand of
draining, thus making it difficult to swap your amulet before fighting it
or something similar (and swapping the amulet once the wand has been use
means a few more level lost while doing so).

So, what is your typical defense against wands of draining when playing
monk ?

Hypocoristiquement,

I asked this question some time ago in RGRN -

Some of the answers that I got might be interesting for you.

Right, remember that one (and even participate in it...)

Anyway, as you might have seen, even being drained (from XL15 to XL10) I
managed to ascend.

Blessed full healing help you recover lost levels, which is a very nice
thing. And the worst damage is the lose of skills, since by the time wands
of draining become a real threat I have usually manage to alchemise enough
full healing (and drink some of them) to have very few problems with the
HPs loss.

By the way, I also remember a thread where someone was speaking about
repetidly losing/gaining the same level with huge changes in constitution
between each moves (rings) in order to loose few HPs but gain a lot. Would
this trick still work in Slash'em ? This would be a great use of a
combination of wands of draining/wands of create monsters to but a bit
more boring routine in the sacfests...
(put rings of -n CON, zap yourself with a wand of drain level, put rings
of +n CON, zap a wand of create monster, get back your level, sac, rinse,
repeat).

I usually don't bother with using semi-offensive wands
(draining/slow/sleep) since I usually find it more useful to simply bash
the monster, or use a direct damage wand/spell.

Hypocoristiquement,
Jym.

If it's a doppelganger monk, try to get bitten by some werecreature or
get an amulet of unchanging and polymorph into some draining resistant
creature (crystal golems have intrinsic draining resistance, MR and
reflection, so you won't get in trouble for ditching the amulet of
reflection - they also don't breathe so you don't need some way to
protect you from pool creation, either).

OTOH, crystal golem appear not to do hand-to-hand damage to certain
monsters (eg Vecna). I've done the chaotic quest as a crystal golem and
had to revert to doppelganger form to kill Vecna (of course, I could have
use my firearms or my 42 blessed fixed +6 shurikens...)

Yeah, that's art's drain level scam. Don't forget rings of gain wis/int and HoB
for increasing power at the same time.
