Well, there aren't any female priests... so I guess somebody "in power"
changed things...

I just tried something similar in wizard mode:

"You kill the matriarch! Snertkat eats a priestess corpse."

Perhaps for ordinary priests, as opposed to high priests, this works
differently...?

In any case, I would consider what you reported a bug.
