Version 1.0.6 of the Hearse Windows client is now available. It can be
downloaded from http://hearse.krollmark.com.
Please note that, since the user's configuration data is now stored in a
configuration file rather than in the registry, it is not possible to
move to the newer version of Hearse and then go back to using an older
version.
Thanks,
-- A.
=============
* Bugfixes: Fixed some irritating bugs where Hearse failed to upload
bones files in some cases if it had been created by running into an
existing bones file. Should also fix the case where Hearse repeatedly
tries to upload bones files which are already on the server.
* User data and other configuration options are now stored in a
configuration file, hearse.cnf, rather than in the registry. This
allows cleaner separation between different versions, and should improve
things for people who are running several roguelikes with Hearse or who
move games between home and work machines.
* By default, the client will replace uploaded bones files with ones of
the same dungeon level. The old default behaviour (keeping uploaded
bones files) is available as an option in the configuration file.
* Supports bones directories - while hearse.cnf must be in the same
directory as the Hearse executable, the bones files do not need to be.
* Your email address is stored in the configuration file, so you can
change it if you change address.
* You may have a nickname (e.g. "Jim the Impaler" ) which is displayed to
other users when they download one of your bones files. Keep it clean,
please
* You may set Hearse to advance you bones files if you have fewer than a
certain number, regardless of how many you've uploaded - by default you
are given two bones files if you have none. These are not 'free' bones
files - you will not be offered a bones file in exchange for the next
two you upload.
* Internal work to allow for 64-bit Nethack support in the future, will
also allow easier support of other roguelikes if they want it.
* Finally, a server tweak so that users may download bones that they
uploaded.

I am running windows and I couldn't change the configuration file, it said
it was speed dial, and had a shortcut icon, I couldn't change the extension
to .txt to edit it, and I had to go into folder options and add Edit to it's
file type to be able to change it, I think, unless this doesn't happen on
other windows machines that you should change the extension.

Didn't happen on either of my Windows machines. If nothing else, you
can open Notepad (or text editor of choice) and either drag-n-drop the
cnf into the editor, or use the file menu to open the cnf file directly.
This bypasses any Windows-defined file type definitions.

The extension is .cnf? For exactly the same reason, the NetHack
configuration file under Windows was renamed a few versions ago.

Awwww rats. I didn't realise that .cnf was overloaded for something
else - thought it was an obvious choice for a configuration file.
I rarely use the Windows interface for NH-related things, so it's not
surprising I didn't run into this. But still very very annoying . As
other people have pointed out, there are lots of ways to edit the file -
my preferred one is to type 'notepad hearse.cnf' from the command line.
What filename would cause the least problems, then? I can release an
updated version of the client to take care of it.

jerk-o's wish is my command - hearse.cnf is dead, long live hearse.ini.
I have posted the new version on the Hearse website as 1.0.6b. If you
upgrade to that, it will read any existing hearse.cnf file and create
you a hearse.ini file instead.

Ruh-roh. I can't seem to get to hearse.krollmark.com. That domain
doesn't resolve from here. I also notice that the domain registration
expired on Wednesday the 13th. Is krollmark having problems?

Um. Not that I've heard of. I think it's mostly likely just an
oversight on renewing the domain registration. I've dropped Matthew a
line, but I expect he is already dealing with it.
I'm afraid that Hearse will be inaccessible for many people until this
problem is resolved. If you are suffering serious Hearse withdrawal
symptoms, the only workaround that comes to mind is to add the following
entry to your HOSTS file:

I also ask that you add an option to type a letter to exit once it's done,
so that(because windows automaticly exits once it's done) it is possible to
see what we got, and who we got it from.

Please snip appropriately what you're quoting.
Hearse is really supposed to be run from the command prompt. I'll throw
a 'pause on exit' option into the mix next time I have a reason to make
a significant update, but until then, if you add the line 'pause' to
nhh.bat, that'll do what you want.

Matthew's renewed the domain registration for Krollmark now. The DNS
changes may take a day or so to propagate, so if Hearse still isn't
working for you now, try it again later.
