Barbarian Question

Ok. This isn't my first Nethack character, but it is the first I've
gotten this far. My Human Barbarian, F2. Got lucky, and had AC 0 by
3rd Level! (Gotta love Crystal Platemail). I'm Level 13, and I've taken
the altar in Minetown and sacrificed everything I could kill.

Here's the first question. Cleaver, or Frost Brand?

Second, How do I increase their enchantments?

Thirdly, this demon is following me around (Yeenoghu or something) is
there a way to make him tame like a pet, because right now he just gets
in my way >:p

And Lastly, where else can I get candles (besides lighting shop in
minetown), because he had precisely 2 cursed tallow candles.

Thanks for your time,
-Shell

Crystal plate is *heavy*. It can be a good idea to replace it
with one of the two types of mithril from the mines even though
mithril doesn't have as good an AC rating. The difference in
the wieght means you can carry a lot of other items without
getting Burdened or worse.

> Here's the first question. Cleaver, or Frost Brand?

Frosty hands down. Second/third best weapon in the game
for any alignment, best available to neutrals. Whether
it is the best or second best for chaotics is a matter
of perspective.

> Second, How do I increase their enchantments?

A medium-common type of scroll.

> Thirdly, this demon is following me around (Yeenoghu or something) is
> there a way to make him tame like a pet, because right now he just gets
> in my way >:p

That only happened because you sacaficed a member of your
own race on the altar and you are chaotic. if you don't
want this to happen in future games, don't do that again.

Y will stay close to you but not *every* move. Y will
only follow you up or down stairs if he's adjacent when
you climb/descend. So the strategy is: get fast, go
down a couple of levels. Dance on and off of the stairs
until he's two away not one. Dash up the stairs and
never go down to that level again. Once you have the
stone from mines end there is no more need to go below
mine town. Alternate stratgey - barbarian smash. Very
high risk of dying before Y dies at your current level.

> And Lastly, where else can I get candles (besides lighting shop in
> minetown), because he had precisely 2 cursed tallow candles.

If needed you can wish for them.

This one is potentially good news. It means there were other
lighting items in the shop. Do you know how to tell magic
lamps from other lamps? Among other traits, magic lamps
never run out of light.

MC=2 for crystal or regular plate vs MC=3 for either mithril.
Nice until the better types of cloak become available.

Peacefull in the mines means not hostile much deeper. There
is an upside if you're fast enough to be able to abandon
Y deep in the mines.

Frost Brand: it's one handed and it does bonus cold damage.

>Second, How do I increase their enchantments?

Wield the weapon, read a scroll of enchant weapon.

I believe the demon lords are untameable.

Candles will be randomly generated as are other objects. If it becomes
really necessary, you can wish for them.

With scrolls of enchant weapon. They are fairly common and can be
identified quite easily because they have a base price of 60.

I don't think he can be tamed (but I'm not sure). I would abandon him on
a level which you will not visit anymore, such as the second level of
Sokoban.

Candles are not important until very late in the game. If you get this
far, you will have found a guaranteed way to get enough candles.

Good Lord, this is like something out of LotR...

-----------------------------------------------------------

"Rapunag euiogbrn, rapunag mnezbe. Rapunag jrncba, abg rapunag rezbe."

The change in the wizard's voice was astounding. Suddenly it became
menacing, powerful, harsh as stone. All trembled, and the Elves stopped
their ears.

"Never before has any voice dared to utter the words of that tongue in
Imladris, Gandalf the Grey," said Elrond, as the shadow passed and the
company breathed once more.

"Oh come on, this is a spoiler newsgroup," answered Gandalf...

Also, mithril has some handy resistive properties I don't know that
crystal plate has.

Human barbarian, probably sacrificed a watchman.

And elven mithril can be still enchanted once at +5 (other armor +3).

Later you'll go for a dragon armor anyway.

Probably not too much of an issue for a Barbarian, but mithril
does hinder your spell casting abilities.

I don't think it was Yeenoghu, but I seem to recall getting a
peaceful demon once from converting the altar in minetown. The
priest got mad at me, and started attacking, so I ended up
killing him, and boom, there was some non-hostile demon.
Converting altars in a temple is something I've avoided since
then. (I'd bought something like -6 protection from the priest
before killing him, and I think I also lost that.)

If you killed (or just attacked?) him you would've lost the protection.
Killing the priest wouldn't have summoned the demon, but sacrificing him
would.

Since the demon showed up nonhostile, you were obviously playing a
chaotic human (demon only shows up for sacrificing your own race, and is
only nonhostile if coaligned... I think).

Playing a orc barbaran, sacrificing a goblin is the quickest way to
conver an altar... but sometimes calls the demon. I can usually get
away with it the first time, but if I #offer a second goblin at the same
altar there's a good chance of a demon showing up.

I think I've only ever seen Yeenoghu as the first demon called. I've
managed to have two demons annoying me. Very carefully do *not* use
hjkl to move around.

Look for oil lamps, brass lanterns, or if you are lucky, magic lamps (they
never run out of fuel).

In my latest barbarian completion I ended up blowing a wish on 7 candles to
be able to attempt to Ascend, but I won't spoil you in why I needed them.

That's the easiest, though I try hard to not hit direction keys
repeatedly. What's more likely is that I'm trying to dogleg and Y
teleports into my path.

-----

I'm trying to get to the altar, "hy", Y teleports onto the sink just
before I hit the 'h', sort of thing.

I'm now really, really careful moving when I've got a big nasty
non-hostile around. Still....

Still, using numberpad, you can't accidentally confirm attacking the
non-hostile. I find hjkl more convenient (lots and lots of vi use, and
it keeps my hand near the other letters) most of the time, it's only in
cases like this that I switch over.
