Well, I don't know what are the odds of this, but I just
stumbled on a level where there are... three different bone
piles from former incarnations of myself! I think this must mean
that I died a first time on this level, then died on the bone
level two times! I clearly remember the last death (from a wand
of fire which I think I have safely gotten back), the two
others must be from a long time ago.

Anyway, I'm very inexperienced at dealing with bone piles, so
I might just die here and leave a bone file! ;)
The beautiful part though is that it's in minetown, so I will
be able to immediately sort the uncursed item from the rest!
I don't dare to hope for the altar to be co-aligned to be able
to make holy water, this would be way too much luck

I don't know if this is possible, someone please correct me:
You could of course get the bones, check the altar (let's say, it's chaotic),
die again, leave a bones again, start a new chaotic character, get the bones
again and have a coaligned altar.

Benjamin

Possible, but the "leave bones" can't be done on purpose (except in wizard
mode, and that's commonly thought of as cheating if you use it for a
non-wizard-mode character afterwards).

Sure, but it's the possibility I was thinking about, not the method ;)

Whenever I play a chaotic monk and end up leaving bones in Minetown, I'll
sac my previous incarnation's corpse on the altar. Or tin it if I ever get
a tinning kit.

It is possible that you have not died there yet, but that you will die
twice on the level in the future and your corpse will land on a time
travel trap. This would explain the presence of the bones piles here in
the present.

Hope this helps,
A.

I love that idea! :)
Indeed the altar is not co-aligned (it's neutral and I'm a lawful
valk). I will however try to use all the stuff to my advantage
without dying. I was helped in this by a blessed identify scroll.
But if I die I will surely start as a lawful character to see if I
can find a bone files again! And if I do die I will really try to
put the bone file (if any) on hearse.
