(also yet another first post to the newsgroup)

I ascended my first character on the train between New York City and
New Haven on Friday (using the Pocket PC port). Paike, the human
female neutral wizard ascended to demigoddesshood with 3,328,856 points
and 200 maximum hitpoints (I once had as many as 250, but the baddies
on the Astral Plane brought me down a bit).

Most of the ascension I owe to luck - I found a spellbook of magic
missile very early on, and the first zap of wand of polymorph changed
my cat to a pit fiend. Pit fiend plus magic whistle equals a great
feeling of security, and lots of free items from shops. (I eventually
had to dispatch the pit fiend when he decided to no longer be tame -
fortunately I was ready to face a pit fiend by then, even one wielding
Firebrand ...)

Overall, a pretty ordinary ascension (as far as I can tell - the only
other time I made it this far was a Barbarian in explore mode and a
Valkyrie who didn't have enough candles to perform the invocation), but
here are a few of the less boring details: I had genocided L, h, and ;
by the time I made it to Medusa, which made my life pretty easy. I
found a magic lamp and blessed it early in the game, but the genie
inside was uncooperative ("You freed me!") - it would have been helpful
to not have to waste a Castle wish on a bag of holding. There were
three leprechaun halls - on levels 20, 23, and 25 - but I had to ferry
all the gold down to the Valley of the Dead in order to lower my AC (my
pit fiend had long since done in the minetown priest).

I ended up spending a Castle wish on a cornuthaum, which was very
helpful: clairvoyance (combined with warning) almost makes light
sources redundant.

Nothing unusual happened on the way from the Sanctum to the Astral
Planes. Finger of death made short work of the Wizard whenever he
decided to show up and I was able to outrun the air elementals. Of
course, Thoth's altar was the third one I tried. :)

I've been playing NetHack on and off since I was a kid - I downloaded
3.1.3 from a BBS when I was 12, or thereabouts - so, man! What a
feeling of accomplishment! Surely, now, I thought, I am an invincible
god among men. Nothing can stop me.

.... so of course I loaded the game right back up again. I let the RNG
roll my character for me. Here is a full (tragicomic) transcript of my
first post-ascension game:

Hello, Scrum, welcome to NetHack!
You are a chaotic male orcish Rogue.
(one move right)
A trap door in the ceiling opens and a rock falls on your head!
(one move up)
An arrow shoots out at you!
You are hit by an arrow!
You die ...

First ascensions usually do.

Nice... Early super-pets are fun!

So you made it as far as the invocation first with a valkyrie then a
wizard? That's pretty good. I'm a combat-wombat, and wizard was about
my 6th ascension, and then only with more difficulty than most
experienced players here would consider normal for a wizard.

That's smart, I still hate dealing with L and (M)MFs.

Some prefer the [HoB, but I just can't imagine a wizard without the
pointy hat.

I remember playing Hack back in high school in the late '80s.
Somewhere I still have a printout of the end screen when I won the game
for the first (only?) time that gives me a laugh when I move or am
going through old junk. My brother rediscovered the game a couple
years ago and got me back into it, and I'm hoping to finish my last
role (caveman) soon.

LOL. Well, so much for ascending back to back.

Congratulations! (On the ascension, that is. :)
