I just (lost obviously from context) a game in which I was about to go to the
level with entrance to Sokoban, but before I decended to that level I put on
my blindfold and lo and behold I saw something I'd never seen before (can't
remember character right now) a TITAN! Like a moron I move to engage it
(despite the fact that it was on the opposite side of the level and both
staircases were on my side AND I had no pet right then. Well within two or so
rounds of reaching it (invisible, but had put on blindfold so stupid me could
find it) was down to 6 h.p. from 78 or so with -4 to -6 a.c. prayed, got h.p.
back, hit once or twice, died (of course). How unusual is it to get a Titan
on so early a level? BTW I checked the high score list and the logfile, and
both said invisible titan.

Polytrap :-( They are the most insidious of traps.

On Sokoban? I don't think I've ever seen a trap there, poly or
otherwise.

On the other hand, it could have been a chamelion. Interesting, a
giant-class monster on Sokoban, can they pick up the boulders there?

No. On Oracle. Which can be DL8, so can have polytraps.

Chamelion would have change form before killing the player. Since he
spotted it from the other side of the level, by the time he reaches it it
should have become a grid bug or some other kind of archlich.

Really? Wow, I've never seen one on Oracle either, but ok.

I doubt it was a chameleon either for the same reason.

If the OP was playing on a server or using Hearse, it also could have
been a bones level, and someone's former pet titan just killed him
before he met the ghost.

What is the earliest dungeon level that can have a poly trap?

no, It would have said chameleon on the logfile, which it didn't. the monster
was in one of the right hand side rooms and the stairs were on the left hand
side rooms with the oracle in the middle. The titan didn't move twoards me
until I was about 8 or so squares from it, so it never got past the hallway
to it's room.

Why do you think that? A wizmode tests suggests that it would show the
name of the monster that the chameleon was polymorphed into.

3.4.1 4 0 1 1 -1 11 1 20050805 20050805 1 Wiz Elf Mal Cha wizard,killed
by a bat

That "bat" was a chameleon.

This seems like a bug. Whatever it looked like, the creature is still a
chameleon.

A look at the death cause list on NAO seems to confirm this: there are
no chameleons on this list, nor sandestins or doppelgangers.

By the way, does anyone know the difference between the reasons
"starvation" (142 times) and "died of starvation" (349 times)?

I tried to get that list to condense as much as possible, but it is
quite possible I've made mistakes in some of the logic. Feel free to
grab the logfile at http://alt.org/nethack/logfile for any analysis
you'd like to perform.

Ok, fair enough, but a few questions (may be included with what a chameleon
does anyways which is what I'm asking I guess). Would such a chameleon cast
disintigration, stun/confuse? along with the (VERY bad) hits of 30 or so
h.p./round.

Well, I'm not to criticise the maker of the analysis program nor its
outcome, but I was wondering what caused the difference.

I did, and I found the watershed is where version 3.4.1 jumps to 3.4.3.

Before, it was listed as "starvation", afterwards as "died by
starvation".

wizard mode doesn't add to the score file. In addition, the "chameleon" never
changed form from the time that telepathy first found it until it killed me,
about 50-100 moves and I kept my blindfold on the whole time.

You didn't say score file, you said logfile, there is a big difference
between the two and Wizmode does add an entry to the logfile.

I don't have any idea what it would do, but if it were polymorphed into a
form that was do those things then it is a possibility.

ok, how about not changing form for 50-100 moves?

Interesting followup to this game. Ran into the bones file in a game
EVENTUALLY killed the titan after emptying the rest of a horn of fire. Tried
to eat titan but too big I guess. Died shortly afterwards. It was level 7 and
the bones file came up on a normal level NOT the oracle level.
