i crank up the focus and it idles around 750rpm(normally idles at 1100 while sitting still) and then slows cuts off, it happens all times of day(wet, dry, hot, cooler) and if i press on the gas it wont die and will be fine to drive.

anyways, does this sound like a clogged fuel injector maybe or failing fuel pump?

any help would be nice, thanks

Hmm, could be a failing idle adjustment sensor, even tho they usually idle up when failing.

Fuel injection might be clogged. Might has poor vacuum, replace that air filter lately?

If you listen under your car, you should be able to hear a very slight buzz from the fuel pump.. if you hear that and it sounds consistent, it's probably not the problem.

I really doubt it's the pump. Clogged FI would be the first thing I'd check.

Reply to Riser

Dirty fuel pump filter in tank will cause similar result. As you start it will have enough fuel, till it sucks large particles up clogging flow and lowering idle till it dies.
Take it somewhere and have em diagnose it electronically. Some do this for free.
If not, I bought a code reader from AutoZone for 40bux for my trucks.

I've seen plugged catalytic converters do that... The beads swell up & the exhaust can't get out.. My cousin just replaced one, after he replaced the trany, that he thought was the problem... $2500 for the trany & $1800 for the cat. converter... Only had 85k on it...

I'd get it scoped.. That's the only way to make sure of what you've got.. Auto Zone will do a basic test read of the codes, for free....

They don't make them like they used to... :frown:

Its in economy mode...

Gas or air are insufficient. when it sits at that low idle, does it sound like its missing (easy to tell on a 4cyl.)? If not, it's not an injector.

Pull the air cleaner and see if it does it then - if that fixes it get a new air cleaner. Otherwise check the fuel filter and pump.

Multi-port fuel injection means one injector per cylinder... Why would an injector on a multi-port injection engine not cause a mis-fire?

???? I think I either didn't explain myself well, or you misunderstood. If 1 injector is clogged, then there will be a misfire. If it isn't misfiring, its likely not the injectors.

So, to answer your question bluntly - because it isn't clogged...

Wingding screwed your gas port. His man juice is clogging your fuel system. Pay a prostitute to suck the fuel out of the car (if you can convince her to drink it all, then you probably won't have to pay her).

Idle motor, or idle sensor which ever you have could be the problem, also the EGR valve can produce some funky problem.

Does the Focus have a self diagnosis feature you can activate to find out exactly what the problem is?

If it does, you can find how to activate and read the results in a repair manual you can pick up from auto parts dealers.

While we're on the topic of odd reported measurements, I notice my fuel meter's arrow often fluctuates half a notch more or less. I was told altitude can cause that, and even some dirty fuel or materials inside the reservoir can cause misreadings.

Any ideas on you guys' side?

That's an easy one :) Fuel level is usually determined via a float inside the tank. As you move - accellerate & slow down, turn corners, go up and down hills, etc., the fuel sloshes around in the tank, and the float bobs up and down. Various methods can limit the fluctuations (electronic tracking using a moving average of measurements, etc), but the fluctuations are always there.

Yeah that's similar to what a bud told me.

So I guess it's normal eh?

I ask all this because I'm trying to get a good idea of my car's fuel consumption and therefore sometimes it may report being low on gas when it only fluctuated near that low fuel zone and there was still a few more liters in there.

Speaking of which, even with a Z24 engine, is a Cavalier with AC on, supposed to only do ~350KM per full filling? The tank is around 56L. (sorry for the Metric, I only know that)
After calculating the usage, I get a full 15L/100, which is VERY bad, way beyond the average city consumption on it, of 10L/100KM (for a 4-inline). Hell that is worse than your average SUV!

a few cheap things i would try first... new spark plugs and wires, fuel treatment and injector cleaner, new air filter.

if that doesnt help you out i would try to find someone that can run it on a computer and get the error codes for you.

if all else fails just pour rubbing alcohol in the heater vents..

causes a nice fire without the nasty accelerant residue..good for fooling the insurance company

GM's (Chevy, Olds, Pontiac, etc.) all fluctuate a lot, Fords (Mercury, etc.) don't fluctuate as much, my Nissan does just a little, but generally its rock solid (and dead on accurate), so I'd say yah, pretty much all of them do. Only time I pay attention to what the gauge tells me is after going a steady speed (or stopped) for a solid minute, and on a level surface - and even that I take it with a grain of salt.

GM just doesn't do small cars very well. Lets see, 350k is about 210miles, and 56L is 14.8gal. Assuming you put about 12gal per fill, that means --- gaah, my wife's V6 van gets that --- 17mpg (7K/L). Wow, I thought Cav's got better mileage than that. Anyways, the Z24 engine is a high output (so to speak) standard engine, and being 'souped up' reduces fuel efficiency. Probably changed the gearing a bit for better performance too, which will also reduce mileage (umm, K/L in your case  )

AC really sucks the juice out of little engines. The compressor is driven off the crank, so it directly reduces fuel efficiency. My parents bought a first-year Cav (1980) back then and even with the 5-speed manual you could really tell when the AC was on.
