Well, I ascended Bretem, a human wizard for my first. I have been
playing since March/April, after rediscovering the game I had played
during my youth. I had played in the late 80's as a kid. My father
brought home HACK from work on a beige diskette with a red and white
label with lines on it. I loved that game, yet never got anywhere. I
didn't even think it was possible to win.

Rediscovering the game, I am loving being a noob. When I first got to
the Gnomish Mines, I was panic stricken by the 'c'. I remember the 'c'
as being a dangerous foe that ended many of my childhood nethack games.
It was as scary as ever.

After a few months of gaming, I have learned the basic do's and don'ts,
mostly from this forum. Thanks to all who helped guide me. Well, now
it is only a matter of time until I ascend every class. I just can't
stop playing.

This game was fun; my first wizard to get past the quest. I had only 3
spells heading into Gehenem. It was tough. But, I kept polymorphing
my spellbooks and reading them. I got about 20 more spells that way.
Then I was dangerous.

I also tried reverse geno on nurses for the first time. Got me about
50 hp, which I needed. I also alchemized effectively for the first
time, giving me an additional 50 hp or so.

I had a bad run-in with a wand of cancellation and my BoH. It was
depressing, but I wouldn't be stopped at that point. I had stashed 4
scrolls of gold detection in a box earlier, so they weren't destroyed.

I also had many pets through the game, and used a magic whistle to
bring them around with me. This, and charm monster spell made killing
things easy. The charm monster really helped me move on the Astral
Planes.

Time to sleep, work in the morn. How sweet it is to have that first
ascension under my belt.

Also, how do I post the specifics of this char, if anyone cares to see?

G'night...

Congratulations! I think we forget sometimes what Nethack looks like
to an uninitiated player: like an unscalable wall to get over. At
least 95% of players never get as far as you, I'd say.

Tell! Ascension posts are always great to read, especially first ones.

That's NetHack for you. :)

Reverse geno'ing nurses can be extremely dangerous. You can usually get
far more hit points by alchemizing or leveling; consider reverse
genociding Wraiths instead, especially as a spellcaster.

I think you're referring to a patch called the Dump Patch that will
output the final screens of each game. Search on Google Groups for more
information. If you don't want to learn to compile the NetHack source
code yourself, I have a Windows binary of 3.4.3 at

http://www.owlnet.rice.edu/~andyj/NetHack.exe.dumpOnly

Be careful when you post an ascension though; it's generally a bad idea
to put in everything from the dump. If it's not noteworthy, don't
include it.
