Compiling NH for color?

I can't seem to get tty color to work on my OS X machine when I compile
HN 3.4.3 myself. Looking through the makefiles and .h files, I see
very few settings related to tty color, and the relevant ones appear to
already be on. But, no color when I run the game in a terminal.

However, I know it's possible, because the downloadable binary for OS X
runs in color. So ... anyone have any ideas what setting I might be
neglecting?

D'oh.

I'm doing patch development, so I'm way too focussed on compiling
instead of the obvious things. You're right, color wasn't on in
options. Sigh...

what about your .nethackrc/defaults.nh/NETHACKOPTIONS variable if you ran in
different directories. There IS a color (sp) variable in the options.
