I found a wand of wishing early on, the first wishes I've ever seen. I
put them to good use. I made my way through Soko no problems and headed
into the mines. Killed a chameleon, ate the corpse, turned into a Gray
Dragon. You can guess what I did. #sit. The egg hatched into my very
own baby dragon, who in addition to my cat Spunkie killed many a gnome.
Down below minetown there was a passage I could not pass, so I had to
leave my baby behind and used a teleport scroll. But Spunkie and I made
it to Mines end and got the luckstone. Made it back up to see my
untamed dragon. I tried to tame it with tripe but throwing it made it
angry and it attacked.

Went back through the main dungeon and saw the quest portal for the
first time ever and visited my quest person. (I'm too low level) I'm
thinking of returning to the mines and using my create monster wands in
the temple. I need Mojo. I had more cash but lost it all reading a scroll.

Read unpaid scroll in a shop. Chose to pay the shopkeeper
rather than kill him. There should be several other ways.

I'm really doomed now. I went back to minetown with my wands of create
monster and headed to the temple. a few four leaf clover's later I was
granted Mojo. I was checking the BUC status of some of the stuff the
created monsters dropped when I noticed a wand (jeweled) in my inventory
that I wasn't able to id by engraving with it. I wondered if it was
polymorph so I zapped some stuff with it.

Yep.

#apply magic whistle. Here, kitty kitty.

First zap, Spunkie the Housecat is now Spunkie the fire vortex.

I thought, lets try again

ZAP, and Spunkie is now an Umber Hulk.

That was the wand's last charge, though I think I've got another jeweled
wand in my stash on lvl 10.

I need to make me some water.

But you should never have any potions or scrolls in your main inventory
unless you need to use them (so maybe a ?oTeleport or something for
emergencies). Put them in a sack and they won't go poof! the first
time you walk into a fire trap or get jolted by an energy vortex.

Don't you engrave some text with your fingers before engrave-IDing
wands? It heps identify polymorph (text changes to random engraving) and
the (cancel|teleport|invisibility) class. I wouldn't zap a wand of which
I have no clue what it is at my pet.

How come you couldn't engrave id a wand of polymorph. It changes the
existing engraving into a random one.

There are a couple times it's nice to be able to cast; identify and
charm monster you can often make use of even if you normally wear a lot
of metal (take it off to cast). And some ranged attack spell is good
for all those jellies/puddings/molds/etc with passive attacks.

But for the most part I don't try to read spellbooks at all with my
valks until pretty late in the game.

I really hope you're not actually wandering around with scrolls and potions
just sitting in your main inventory, especially not something as precious
as a ?oCharging.

You're one gnome-with-a-wand (or like mishap) away from substantial
cussing.

But then only thing you have to do is hunt down the leprechaun. Another
scenario would be that he created a leprechaun and a rock mole. So he
dropped all his gold before attackink the l so the r ate it.

Yes, I do that. Which makes me think that perhaps I didn't test the
jeweled wand, but thought I did. Or else the one I tested was chargeless?

But since it poly'd the items and I'd when I did that I figured it was
ok to zap Spunkie with.

The dumb umber hulk wandered off in minetown and got killed by a
shopkeeper. I put the corpse in the shopkeeper's icebox.

Yes, but I tend to think "better to have them for an emergency" than to
leave them levels behind. The ?oCharging I have used. I'm a Dwarf so
the Gnomes have been peaceful. I really do need a bag of holding though.

I don't think you do. Reading a spellbook can, though. I learned that
the hard way. Oh, and quaffing from fountains can too -- "you feel the
urge to bathe" or some such, and you drop some gold.

I don't know if the spellbook hit is only if cursed or when too high
level.

I am coming to the conclusion that it makes little sense for my valkyrie
to read spellbooks, though. Wearing the armor I am, there's no way I'm
going to be able to cast anything. Maybe later game.

I was trying to figure out how to do it when I realized I could just run
Nethack in tty mode (I usually play in X11 tiled mode, though I
sometimes play in console mode. I rarely play tty in a terminal in
X,except when playing on NAO) in an rxvt terminal window and copy/paste
what info I wanted into another rxvt terminal window with the vi editor
running.

There are a surprising number of calamities which can befall your
gold, but to which you are immune if said gold is in a container (even
one you are carrying).

Main inventory is for: worn, wielded, provides continuous effect when
carried, plan to use right now and/or life depends on being able to
use it in a single turn with no warning.

Drop the money and let your pet steal it back to you.

Or don't read unpaid scrolls. I don't even pick them up unless I've
chatted with the shopkeeper and got enough information on the price to
know that it's not 100. After I've handled all the scrolls that don't
cost 100 I start to process those. First I drop all my gold into the
shop and the I start to pick up those scrolls that cost 100. I pick up
and drop the same scroll four times before I name it. If it crumbles to
dust I name it accordingly and pay it.

I haven't found +oID yet. And won't; I got snuffed.

I thought I could take the priest in Minetown. Damn was I wrong. Nice
bones file if one was generated, though; I dropped as much as I could to
reduce speed and avoid 'xplody stuff... and I didn't have any scary
pets.

Yeah, it doesn't seem very useful. It's taking me a long time to get
sufficient Pow to cast identify, since I don't otherwise use magic.

Your armor class is very poor for that point in the game. The GDSM is
good, but I'd suggest going through the armor you've found (and maybe
offing some of the peaceful dwarves in the mines) and finding any
enchanted stuff you can. Even a pair of +0 iron shoes will beat the rotted
low boots you've got, and with a bit of looking you can usually find some
+2 or +3 armor just laying around where you've killed orcs/elves/whatever.
It should be easy at this stage of the game to have at least -15 AC just
from the junk piles you've left.

Yep. I carry gold in main if I don't have a container, I stash it to my
container when I have a moment -- and enough gold it'd irk me to lose,
or I've got a BoH and want to reduce weight. I rarely find an immediate
need for money.

Because I thought I already had and thought I'd got some kind of "didnt
do anything" result. I'm beginning to realize that I need to keep notes
while playing to prevent stuff like that from happening.

And yes, I do have another one.

When I engrave-test wands and see no effect, I engrave those wand as
"engr1", "engr2" and so on to remember which ones I have tried out, so
I know which ones take further identifying.

If I found the wand in a bones pile or in a dead monster's inventory, I
often use "engr1/emp?", "engr2/emp?" and so on to notify that the wand may
have been already used by somebody else and so it could just be empty.
