Does good quality RAM improve the performance by much? would,nt it be better to run sdram @ above 133Mhz in cas 2 to put off buying DDr ram till they workout a good chipset?

The AMD761 is a good chipset (except for the normal problems with the Via686b Southbridge). It can be found on the Asus A7M266, among others.

DDR will offer a decent performance difference over SDRAM. However, if you are willing to wait, you might want to look at the nForce, when it comes out. It has dual-channel SDRAM and DDR support, and both can be used at once.

well quality ram only gets you performance benifits if you USE it.
eg generic ram @ 133 cas3 will be exactly the same as crucial 133 @ cas3.
but the crucial can go cas2 and/or higher megahertz.
hell... i had PC133 ram running at PC66!
but now... i spent a little extra cash on kingmax PC150 SDRAM cas 3,3,2.
im running it AND the system bus at 150Mhz and full Cas2.
it shows a very noticable performance increase from 133Mhz cas2.

in fact in the sandra2001 memory benchmark my PC150 performs at a similar level to generic PC2100 DDR ram @ CAS2.5

sdram is far from dead yet my friend.
as to which you should go for... that depends on your needs.
if unsure you can use the asus a7a266. this board can accomidate either sdr or ddr (but not at the same time)
