Am getting ready to upgrade my psu, graphics card and get a larger monitor. Just out of curiosity I measured mine to see exact

dimensions.

What I don't understand is the Acer P236H that I have is called a 23" monitor but the viewable screen only measures 20.25"

and the actual physical dimension of the monitor is only about 21.5"... so why is it called 23"?

Solution
You probably measured the width. The 23 inches is the diagonal - I looked up the specifiations, which say it has an active display area of 20.07 × 11.29 inches, and the diagonal I calculate for that is 23.03 inches.
