Question about Vlad

Hi all. I've never posted here before, but I've been lurking for a while. I
hope this isn't a stupid question, but here goes...

So I'm playing a Valk, and things are going really well. I'm in Gehennom,
and it looks like this will be my first ascension; I have all the armor,
weapons, & supplies I need.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I made it up to the top floor of Vlad's
tower and hammered him once or twice without taking a hit. He apparently
saw where this fight was going, and teleported away. I looked around the
top floor, but he wasn't there. I checked the other floors of his tower,
and still no sign, so either a) he level-teleported, or b) he teleported to
the stairs & ran far, far away. Both of those are surprising, seeing as how
Vlad's tower is a no-teleport-zone (isn't it?).

So my question is this: when Vlad runs, does he run anywhere in particular,
or am I going to have to scour the entire dungeon looking for him? I hope
you guys can help. thanks.

Hmmm... I didn't think Vlad could teleport. Very odd, maybe he had a
wand?

Are you sure he didn't die and leave you the candelabra?
The few times I've faced Vlad it has been whack, whack,
croak, leave items. I guess I over-prepare.

In this case, he should still be in the same dungeon branch, i.e.,
somewhere in Vlad's Tower. (Right?)

If he had a wand of teleport or something, I guess he might have done
this, demon-prince-style. A wand, though, shouldn't have more than
maybe 10 charges == less than 10 floors, and, at any rate, I doubt
that he'd have teleport control.

So, some suggestions:
-If you've got any source of telepathy, use it.
-He might have died somewhere nearby and dropped his loot. Check
exhaustively for that.
-This might be insulting, but did you find and check all the secret
alcoves?

AHA! I found him!

It turns out that he does have teleport control; he's been doing the
teleport-to-upstair & run away trick. I caught up with him in Juiblex'
Swamp, and chased him up 2 more floors before he died. Oddly enough, he was
only carrying the candelabrum, a sword, and a wand of MM. I saw him
teleport the turn before he died, too, so he couldn't have dropped a wand
of teleport. Either he had a pile of scrolls, or he somehow got
teleportitis and teleport control as intrinsics. This seems very odd to me.
Am I missing something?

He probably had a cursed scroll of teleportation, levelporting him to
Jubilex' realm.

Wrong. He can be anywhere between the bottom of the Tower and DL1 (in
the main Dungeon-Gehennom line).

Covetous monsters (of which Vlad is one) don't need external sources
of teleportation to do the go-to-stair trick; however, they go to
_upstairs_, and the top level of Vlad's Tower doesn't have any.

Do up-ladders also count? Ie, if you had somehow lured him one level
lower, would he be able to heal on the ladder up?

No, specifically stairs and not ladders in this case (STRAT_HEAL of
tactics()).
