I like to wait until I have at least 50 hit points, and enough gear to
fend off any painful effects. Some of the possibilities are good
enough, I think, to balance out the risks.

Well, I recently got a money drop from kicking, followed by a wish sit,
and a genocide sit...after which the throne poofed.

Put items you don't want cursed (BoH, unihorn) into the
convenient nearby chest.
Keep your unihorn handy (:-) for confusion, stunning,
stat loss, etc. (Maybe keep it in a sack or oilskin bag?)
Ditto for items you don't want exploded by electric shock
(wands/rings).
Be prepared to be teleported randomly on the level.
You won't have your BoH, rings, or wands, remember,
unless you put them into a sack or oilskin bag.
Maybe carry the chest while #sitting on the throne?
Unfortunately if you drop the chest on the throne you
then can't sit on the throne.
Be prepared to handle "Thy audience is summoned." This
is probably the big one. If it puts you into a really bad
situation try #sitting on the throne and hope for a random
teleport.
Have any un-identified items that are immune to shock/cursing
in you main inventory in case you are granted an insight (i.e.
you get to id a few of the items in your main inventory).
(Dropping money is one I hadn't thought of.)
I do it mostly for getting a wish or a genocide.
