The nethack documentation references an option file where I can add:
OPTIONS="numeric_pad, . . .
I used Fink to install under X11 of a MiniMac running OS10.3.9. This is
the only version of nethack I could find that would run satisfactorily
(too bad as the mac tile version looks better).
My question: Where is the option file?
I know little about Unix or X11, just enough to find my way around and
make a few changes where required. Find doesn't help because my guesses
at the name of the option file apparently are wrong. I avoid environmental
variable as I forget about them by the time I remove the program, but an
option file should leave with the program.

So the tile version ran... what was the problem with it?

In your home directory, it's a hidden file nameed ".nethackrc"
If you pick up a copy of BBEdit Lite (can be hard to find, Bare
Bones would prefer you to use the pay-for version), it'll allow
easy opening/editing of hidden files.

Correct, but irrelevant given the install route taken by the OP.

Thanks to all who responded. I first looked for .nethackrc as it was
mentioned in the documentation but apparently I'll have to create it. No
problem, I'll probably just copy one of the other ones. I thought the
example was "numeric_pad, and yes ! was used for "not," but I'll check
again, the quotes were probably from the environmental route.
The version that works OK is under X11. The tiled version is under
OS10.3.9 and the problem was it loaded once and the next time it hung. I
assume it was looking for something, but there was no error message so
that was enough of a warning not to proceed. (I'm retired, but I used to
do this sort of thing.)

I suspect that setting some of the options in your .nethackrc might
allow the tiled version to work for you. Specifically:
!news
!legacy
name=player
Can't guarantee it though, just had problems with 'apparent hangs'
at startup related to these in the past with the tiled version...
