I don't suppose anyone has written a patch for the windows version of
nethack which allows for the perm_invent option to work. I use the debian
version at home but here at work I sometimes play and I have to use windows.

Please check my understanding of what perm_invent does:

When you drop an item, that item remembers what letter it
had in your inventory when it was dropped. If you later
pick that item back up, and if that letter is open in
your inventory at that time, then it uses that letter
again. Putting into a container, same thing.

I play using the windows binary, I set perm_invent, and
I get that behavior regularly. I'll have a spare weapon
in slot "d", put it into my bag of holding, shuttle
various stuff around maybe using "d" maybe not, drop the
various stuff, take the spare weapon back out when I
decide to explore some more, and it gets letter "d" again
even though some other item may have been "d" in between.

I get this behavior across saves as well, though I only
save and restore on the same machine not back and forth
between Windows and Linux.

According to the Guidebook perm_invent displays your inventory in a window
permanently. This is the behavior I get with the debian gnome version at
the house, but it is not what you get with the windows version.
