M515 to Tungsten T5 - Considerations?

I've just ordered a PalmOne Tungsten T5 to replace my aging M515. I've
been using a Mac to Sync, and Mark/Space's Missing Sync to synchronize them.

What can I expect with this migration?

Does anyone know of a consolidated list of third party apps which are
incompatible with Palm OS 5?

Any suggestions on how to move from the M515 to the T5?

Thanks in advance for any help.

There's a great list of T5-friendly apps at http://www.palmfocus.com

Keep in mind the T5 doesn't have the universal connector that the
m505/515/T... do. That's why i upgraded to the T3.

I had the universal on my M515 (which I bought when the Tungstens were just
arriving), and am not impressed. Lately, I've had to hold the darn thing down
in the cradle to get it to sync reliably. I never thought the connection
between the Palm and universal cradle was that great.

Also, I reeeally hated the fact that I bought older technology when newer
stuff was available - though the difference between the T3 and T5 isn't that
great.

I'm looking forward to bluetoothing to my cell phone and my Powerbook, though
the data rate's nothing to write home about. I hope the palm will sync and
net connect at USB2 speeds, though I'm not holding my breath on that one
either ... :-).

It may be not great but if you buy a T5 you cannot use any accessories
you have, if they use the universal connector.

Well, the vibrator for the T5 may be newer but it is also inexistant.
Ditto for the voice recorder.

For me, it is. In favour of the T3

SnapperMail Enterprise edition - which also has issues with the T5 and Treo
650 <sigh>. But, overall it's a more solid email program (in my opinion)
though it does lack some features of Versamail.

Maybe they'll update Versamail, but it looks like they only put out one per
model.

I didn't buy at the $400 price - I got it for $300 ($250 w/$50 rebate).

Yeah, it's a trade-off. Permanent memory (stays even on complete power-down)
vs. finite life memory.

More than that ... Versamail just kept dying on me.

I have three email accounts, one POP3 and two IMAPs. Versamail would keep
hanging on IMAP mail retrieval, timeout attempting to connect on both pop3
and IMAP sessions, timeout permanently while some spam email had incomplete
RFC822 headers, and stop connecting with certain IMAP and pop3 accounts
(which my Mac and telnet [palm] connected to just fine).

I actually liked Versamail's interface and features. I just didn't like its
real-world reliability.

To be fair, it looks like SnapperMail is corrupting databases on archive (at
3AM in the morning). At least I *hope* it's only corrupting the databases on
archive. (I've turned it off and am waiting to see what happens).

Thanks for that. I've not had any problems with Versamail ... but I've
only used it with POP3, not IMAP.

SWMBO had Eudora on her Treo270 (until the cover snapped for the second
time and she replaced it with a SymbianOS smartphone) which also seemed
pretty reliable.

Cheers,
Daniel.

You pays your money and you takes your choice, as they say.

The T5 is cheaper now than my T|T was when I bought it and has 50% more
screen space, more momory, and non-volatile storage AND no damn silly
slider. It looks like a bargain to me.

Dell currebtly have a 20% discount offer on the Axim X30, which puts it
at around the same price, but ... it only has a 320x240 pixel display
rather than the 320x480 of the T5 and doesn't have the large amount of
non-volatile storage that the T5 offers. The Axim *does* have a
removable battery, though, which is an advantage, and has WiFi ...

If WiFi is more use to you than NV storage and you don't care about the
lower-resolution display or the disfunctional operating system please
feel free to buy an Axim. Just don't expect everyone else to judge by
the same values. Of course, you can have WiFi AND NV storage AND the
higher resolution dsplay if you buy a T5 and a Palm WiFi card.

> Why is it that it's predecessor, the T3, gives you so many more
> features for your money?

More features? It has a voice recorder, vibrating alarm , Universal
Connector, and an irritating collapsing design. It lacks the larger
NVRAM storage, but generally costs the same amount (if you can still
find one). For my purposes the T5 is a much better uy than the T3 ...
but I have no investment in UC peripherals and I don't use the voice
recorder or vibrating alarm. Other people would make a different call.

> Also, why buy the wi-fi card when equivalantly priced Dell Axim's
> come with wi-fi built-in?

The Axim normally costs more, has only 64MB and no NVRAM data storage,
and has half the display resolution. A T5 and a Wireless card cost much
the same as an Axim and a memory card, and the T5 has a better display.

Oh, ... let's be fair: the Axim includes a cradle.

> The point is that the memory now has a lifespan, unlike previous RAM

No, the point is that although the memory has a lifespan you're never
likely to see it fail or lose you data ... not even through depleted
batteries.

Cheers,
Daniel.

Let's see... for today I have about 10 alarms, one of those has been
moved to later, so it would have been 11 times my coworkers would have
been bothered with my T5 (if I had that one). I'm not synching my Palm
AND my phone to my PC, it is either one or the other. And, s one (or a
few) alarms in a phone do not fill my needs, your choice is not
suitable for me. I'm do not want to carry a separate voice recorder
all day long just in case.

And some, like the T3, do it OK. And the T5, with a vibrator and a
voice recorder (or even only with a vibrator) would be perfect for me.
As I don't think a vibrator is very expensive, I find a bad move not
to have put one in a new model.

I agree with that

And a little additional device to carry (or to forget at home...), or
to charge.

This is good. A daily copy in my SD Card makes mine just a little
worse than that, though, and I always have the option to sync and have
it (almost) all back in the T3.

> It also has bluetooth which
>allows me to tether from my S60,

The T3 has also BT. It is normal than a newer, similar level model has
the same (if not more) than the older ones.
