Did I order the wrong laptop? Acer ASPIRE (send it back?)

Hello,

I was interested in getting some opinions on this matter, I've just ordered an

Acer Aspire AS5742G-6846 15.6" Notebook Computer
$630
2.53GHz Intel Core i3-380M 4GB (2x2GB) RAM 640GB 5400rpm Hard Drive SuperMulti DVD Burner nVIDIA GeForce GT 540M 1GB GPU 15.6" LED Backlit Widescreen Display Integrated Webcam & Microphone 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) 5.7 lb

Did I make a mistake? I just saw this one for

Aspire AS7741G-6426 17.3" Notebook Computer Its $650
2.66GHz Intel Core i5-480M 4GB (2x2GB) RAM 640GB 5400rpm Hard Drive SuperMulti DVD Burner ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6550M 1GB GPU 17.3" LED Backlit Widescreen Display Integrated Webcam and Microphone 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) 7.3 lb

I want a decent priced laptop with a dedicated card I want to be able to do some video editing and maybe a little gaming. I just want to get the best bang for my buck. I plan to keep the laptop for at least 3-4 years. What issues can I expect with either of these computers?

Whats the difference in performance between the Radeon 6550M and the GT540M both have 1 GB

  1. Well you missed out on a larger display (and possibly resolution) as well as a slightly more powerful processor. The GPU's are roughly equivalent with the GT540M being a little bit superior to the HD6550M (but not by much).
  2. Should I swap them?
  3. I don't know it's up to you - do you mind having a smaller screen but a faster graphics card? Personally, I would swap it because I just can't stand having a small screen, but it's really up to you and what you're expecting from your laptop. IMO there isn't much difference between the two GPU's so I would honestly go for the other one, the one with an i5, that would make the most sense.
  4. The GT 540M on the 1366x768 resolution should get you better gaming performance than the HD 6550 on 1600x900 resolution.

Once you add up the shipping charges, any re-stocking fee and the difference in price it's probably not worth your trouble to do a swap.
  5. Ok well then I will keep the GT540 when it arrives
  6. A smart move I think.
