I bought an AMD Athlon 1GHz CPU in Febuary 2001, and I've had problems with it the last two months. I've tried all I can to find our what's wrong, but I haven't found any wrongs just yet.

My problem: My computer 'shuts down' after about 4-5 minutes after I turn it on. Some times, it lasts for days, but most of the time, it shuts down while loading windows. It also happens in the BIOS, so it doesn't have anything to with my OS.

What happens, is that it does a successfull boot from BIOS, and starts loading. After a few minutes, the screen just goes blank (my monitors power light turns yellow). First, I thought it was my Matrox Mill. G400 that was faulty, but I changed it, and the problem lasted still. After I changed *ALL* my other hardware, like my Ethernet card, soundcard, CD-rom, harddrives, RAM and even power supply. Everything that is left, is my Motherboard and my AMD CPU.

My motherboard is a MSI K7T PRO2, and shouldn't have any problems with the CPU (takes 600Mhz up to 1,3Ghz). It's either this motherboard or the AMD CPU.

It's pretty frustrating, because this was expensive for me. I would want to know if this is common, what I should do, and how I can prevent this from happening. Do I need a BIOS update?

Please, I'm desperate.

do you have to wait to trun it back on or can you turn it back on right after this problem happens

how big of a power supply do you have

I have to wait for a long time. Some times it goes up right away and stays up for a couple of hours, and some times it doesn't work at all.

I've changed the power supply, so I don't think it's that... It's a 300W power supply from the AOpen HX08 tower. It should provide enough power to my girl :)

But - I already changed it, and the same thing happened with a completely different power supply. Do you have any other bets you wanna make? Please? :)

Did yoy change with one with a higher watt rating, or did you merely replace the one which may have been defective.

Thank you for your reply!

I just replaced the one that I thought could be defective (the 300W), with a power supply from another tower. This would be 200W or 250W. I'm not sure about this, but it shouldn't matter.

The same thing happened, so I figured it couldn't be the power supply. 300W should be more than efficient to run my computer...

The only thing left, is the CPU and the motherboard.

Do you really think I should get myself a 350W power supply?? For real?!

Thanks!

it sound like some thing may be over heating
make sure all the heatsinks have a good inteferface between them and what ever there on also check the heat senser placement on the cpu

also make a total list of al componet and os you are useing

Thanks!

I turned off everything, so I had like one HD running, the CPU and that's it. Ripped everything out, vacuumed everything (even the power supply on the inside), every fan is cleaner than what you get from the factory... And I waited till it was in room temperature, and tried. Didn't work much.. :(

So, I've tried about everything I can think of without changing my CPU and motherboard.

The strange thing is, I have these diagnostic lamps or whatever on my motherboard, and they're all green (which is good). The computer doesn't even respond to the reset button...

Oh, well..

Thanks a lot, I'll try some more ;)

you could always try to boww a frinds cpu and try it in ypour system that way a least you can know if it is the mobo or the cpu

Does the M/B bios has auto shut down if the cpu temps are high? Maybe the cpu is overheating and the m/b shuts down. Have you tried a different fan/heat sink?
