Just had a something new happen to me - my Samurai was happily
sacrificing in Minetown, when all of a sudden an incubus pops up.
Nothing to worry about, and I head over to dispose of it.

Unfortunatly, I did not kill it before it got my speed boots and cloak
off. I was just skipping throught the messages, when one came up I
haven't had before...

This ruby ring looks pretty! Will you wear it for me? (y/n)

What does this mean? It was an unidentified ring in my inventory; now
it has identified itself as a ring of adornement, even though I didn't
wear it. Is it only incubi that can do this, or can anything else?

Thanks,

Joe

When female characters encounter Incubi (or whatever the plural of
Incubus is) and are carrying rings of adornment, the Incubus will
attempt to put said rings of adornment on your character (generally
improving the outcome of your encounter). Succubi encountering male
characters will do the opposite - they will steal any rings of adornment
you may have and then wear them (generally worsening the outcome).

Only incubi will put a ring of adornment you carry on your finger if you
are female (why they don't use engagement ring for that, I don't know).
Succubi will take a ring of adornment from you if you are female (this
is somewhat annoying if you use the ring to raise your charisma to a
"safe" level).

Basically, if you have a ring of adornment in your inventory, an incubus
will try to make you wear it, and a succubus will try to take it. This
gives females a slight advantage when dealing with foocubi.

Foocubi have a certain infatuation for rings of adornment. Incubi will
request that their *ahem* "lady companions" wear it, and Succubi will
try to take it from you... sort of a "commitment" thing, if you could
call it that.

Foocubi aside, other monsters would just as soon eat whatever rings you
might have (except for a certain ring which they find hard to swallow),
along with you *and* the horse you rode in on.

And yet another reason to play female chars (I thought the only
one was you can lay eggs). Are there reasons to play male characters
rather than female ones?

Eggs not layed by you that hatch while in your male character's inventory
have a chance of becoming your pets. The code comments say something along
the lines of "a creature recognises its mother instinctively, but learns to
recognise its father". Dragon eggs hatching in inventory always become the
pets of male characters, I don't know what happens if the character is
female.

IIRC the probability of a succubus removing the ring is the same as for
removing an item of clothing - charisma / 20. So if the ring of adornment
boots charisma to 20 or more, it shouldn't get stolen.

The probability of a good effect from a foocubi encounter is (int + char) /
34.

Well, no. As discussed in another subthread, foocubi are interested in
rings of *adornment*, and not engagement rings.

Obviously, foocubi are more interested in attractiveness than commitment.
