Problem hard drive

i have a laptop hard drive which crashed (it ran on vista 0/s) and no longer boots up, so i bought a usb caddie to connect it to either or my two systems. The first i tried was my main tower which ran it perfectly except that it wanted to reformat it and wouldnt let me view the contents, the second, another laptop, displayed the hard drive in device manager but failed to show it my computer. How can I get at it to recover the data please

It most definitely sounds like the HDD is bad. Have a look at the link below and try a few of those tips. They may seem a bit off kilter, but some do work.
