My computer cuts off when im using it

Hello, after using my computer or about a half an hour or more the screen blanks out but the power button remains on and no matter how hard i try to press all sorts of keys, the screen remain blank. on numerous occasions, i tried holding down the power button to turn it off, still nothing happens it doesn't shut down. the only option i'm now left with is to remove the battery from the laptop and the problem just happens over and over again.... can you plz tell me why this is happening?

To be sure then, the screen goes blank, but the rest of the laptop remains on, correct?
