Right. I've told a friend I'll help with the reorganisation of her office network.

At the moment (I only have so much info right now. More later) there are about 10 stand alones and a printer in the two offices. Outside connection is via a cable modem.

Apparently one stand alone is configured as a server (I don't know in what way), and it, four other stand alones and the printer are connected.

The objective is to get all stand alone onto the network, allowing internet and printer access.

Like I said, I don't have all the info, and it'll be Wednesday until I do, but is this as simple as I think it is?

Is it a question of putting a switch between the cable modem and the stand alones, or will I need a router too?

Also, what will be the I.P. situation here? Will it most likey be a dynamic I.P. address at the moment, or (hopefully) a network address?

I've done networking at college, but have had no commercial experience, so I hope you'll appreciate my lack of confidence.

Camie.

Get a cheap router and a cheap 16-port switch. Bill them for both, and the 15 minutes it'll take to plug them all in.

So.

Is it:

Outside world - Cable modem
Cable modem - Router
Router - Switch
Switch - nodes

Can you connection a route to a switch? I thought a route with 5 ports is design only to support 5 computer.

we do a thing called daisy chaining in nz
i had 2 5 port hubs and i used a network cable to link the 2 hubs so 2 5 port hubs is like 1 8port hub
(some can do this some cant)

Sorry I did not make myself clear. I meant I don't think if you connect a switch to a router then all port on switch will have routing capability.
