I'm currently on my way to ascending a lawful samurai, but I'm facing a
small problem. The mysterious
force, so I've heard, makes it extremely hard and annoying to get out of
Gehennom with lawfuls.
So I was thinking of using a helm of opposite alignment for a faster
ascension run. The only
problem is the protection loss. I currently have 11 points of protection,
and I really would like
to keep it that way. Is the protection loss permanent or do I get my
protection back when I
remove the helmet? Or is there any other way to recover lost protection? I
really wouldn't want
to give another 50 000 to a priest.

If I remember correctly, you won't get it back when you remove the
helmet. You'll have to rebuy the protection.
I think you lose the protection whenever your alignment changes, so you
will lose it when you put it on. If you buy them back BEFORE removing
the helmet and then remove the helmet, you will lose the protection
*again*.

Arf. Well, I'll just have to rely on my neverending luck to see me through
this
one. No Helm of opposite alignment then.

I wouldn't worry about it. All (both) of my ascensions have been with
Lawful characters, and the mysterious force really isn't *that* bad.
Course, I also drill out a quick route from stair to stair before I wake
Rodney, and I explore Gehennom with a pick-axe in hand so I knock down a
lot of walls by accident too, which makes it easy to get around in.

Yes well, it wasn't that bad. It was even worse. The mysterious force
surrounded
me three times in a row, throwing me down six levels. I only managed to get
out
by using my cursed potions of gain levels. But I'm still glad I didn't use
my last
wish for that helm. My bag of holding suddenly went from blessed to cursed
on
dlvl 6. I had to rescue what I could from it, and I then used my last wish
for
another blessed bag of holding. I couldn't pick up the old one to dip it in
holy
water, and I was too burdened to take anything out from it while I was
carrying
it. But I still did ascend though, and with my highest scrore so far. So my
luck
did defeat the evil RNG.

Congrats !
For future occasions where you BoH gets cursed, I think zapping it
with a wand of cancellation removes the curse.

I thought it just makes it a normal bag, which would allow it to be lifted
again and would remove the mean disappearing of objects. But either way, I
never ever carry wands of cancellation with me. Far too risky. I'm pretty
sure I would accidently put it in my BoH.
And what the heck is wrong with my posts looking all messed up.

It doesn't.

If you have controlled level teleport in your sack marked EMERGENCY you
can drop the cursed bag and the Amulet, bamf to your stash, recover a
WoCancel, and bamf back again.

You use Outlook Express. Don't.

Good idea. Better remember that one.

I doubt it's because of that. None of my previous posts have been messy like
that. I just probably can't use this thing correctly. Oh well.

You doubted that cancelling a BoH left a BoH, too.

I think you just type lines that are two long.
Like for me (in dreaded google groups), your above message went
something like this:
Actually, I think the problem just fixed itself. In case
these messages show
normally to you guys, then the problem is solved.

Potions of gain level are subject to the mysterious force.
The real question about having to re-do these 6 levels is: Did anything
actually happen on the way? Did Rodney pop up 3 more times? Were you
surrounded by 3 Pit Fiends, Demogorgon, and Geryon? If not, then the
mysterious force was NOT THAT BAD.

Zap with wand of cancellation...and if necesary, drop *everything* but the
bag in order to loot a holy water out of it (well, preferably a different
bag, since the holy water can explode).
