My current gnomish ranger is doing good, she has finished sokoban,
the mines and the bigroom (first time I say a bigroom, the fact
that my god gave me Mjollnir was a great help for killing all nasties)
and is now level 10.
There is a co-aligned altar in the main dungeon, and I'm considering
camping there to do some serious monster sacrificing.
My question is: how do I get the monsters? In the only other game in
which I've done mass sacrificing I was a wizard with the create monster
spell, so it was really easy. How do I manage it without this spell?
I do have a wand of create monster, but that makes for a small number
of monsters alltogether, and I can think of nicer ways to use scrolls
of charging than on wands of create monster.
So, do I just hang around and wait for monsters? Is there a sufficient
number of them that get generated so I don't starve in the process?

Wands, scroll or bags of create monsters.
Scroll or PYEC to charge them (PYEC is the best, of course).
Magic trap if there is one not too far from the altar is also nice.
My first altar camping was done on a level with magic trap. Between the
monsters generated by the trap and the randdom bunch of orcs generated
while carrying corpses, I had time to sacrifice a lot. Plus I emptied all
my wands/bags there.
Remember also that since you have Mojo, one of the best artefact in the
game, you probably don't want to sacrifice to get another artefact (don't
get the skills limits right at hand, maybe one of the brand could be
raised higher for ranger but chances of getting lots of foobanes are
high). So just #pray asap and hope for the spellbooks/protection.

Several possibilities spring to mind for a vanilla game:
1- Vault guards. If you are tough enough to take on a vault guard, they
can be generated in limitless quantities by hanging out in emptied
vaults. Simply refuse to do as he asks, throw abuse at him when he asks
your name, and eventually he'll turn nasty. Vault guards will drop some
nice armour for you, but be aware of the consequences of sacrificing
human corpses. Once the guard is dead, the vault walls heal up, so be
sure to have a means of digging or teleport handy.
2- Shrieker abuse. Get a shrieker. Poke it with a thoroughly rusty -5
orcish short sword until it shrieks. Every ten shrieks (on average)
generates one monster. Heal the shrieker (or allow it to heal) as
necessary.
3- Pudding farming. Get yourself a brown/black pudding, or at least a
corpse of one with a wand of undead turning. Consult one of the many
"how-to" threads/spoilers on pudding farming.
4- Nymph summoning. Get a bell. Curse it. Ring it. A nymph will appear
for you to kill. Repeat until bored. Sadly, I don't think nymphs
generated this way carry the normal nymphy items.
If you were playing slashem, I'd have a few more suggestions for you.

Dig into a fountain to create a lake, reverse genocide gremlins, and wait.
Warning: gremlins are a risky maneuver sometimes.

The PYEC is out of the question: she's playing a ranger, which is
chaotic. Therefore, ways to generate monsters which are finite are not
really fit for serious monster sacrificing.

Again, a finite source (even with the PYEC).

The RNG always seems to give me the magical explosing at the first
try... :-(

I'm playing a gnomish ranger, therefore my alignment is neutral.
But even with PYEC I can charge my wands only a finite number
of times, right?

How can the PYEC have an influence on magic traps?

Has anybody tried long worm farming? Obviously would need healing.
Wizmode testing suggest it is possible, if not sensible or easy.

It is worth remembering every level with a sink to have
a known source of puddings.

I haven't gotten bells from polypiling. Would it require a
wish?

I've split long worms, killed and sacced one, then done the same
with the other half on occasion. Long worms grow too slowly IMO
compared to the rate other monsters are created. So rather than
being better than nothing, it's only a trivial improvement on
nothing.
In my experience with Valks in the mines, /oCM, (oT and other
monster creating objects appear often enough to perhaps double
the rate monsters appear randomly so I've just camped in mine
town and wandered around killing. When I started playing
spell casters who know create-monster, I got really spoiled
at the ease.

I've gotten bells from polypiling.
I wouldn't bother wishing for one. There is a 1/4 chance of a nymph per
ring, and it can (and so eventually will) shatter.

There's one bell that won't, but then you need to burn a scroll of charging
and a potion of holy water on it to ascend.
