Hi guys,

UK shooters should be aware that the Home Office has issued a
consultation paper on the control of firearms as the first step in
what is described as "a comprehensive review of firearms legislation".
The paper covers possible changes to the current laws governing
firearms, shotguns, airguns, ammunition, the shooting trade and clubs.
The paper can be downloaded in PDF form from the following page at the
home office website, the consultation period for responses from the
general public ends 31st August 2004.

Interesting reading for a consultative document, however the inclusion of a
photograph and autograph makes it seem like a publicity exercise unusual
don't you agree?

It is depressing that at a quick first read I noticed three errors in
the stated current procedures and law. What chance is there of serious
discussion if they apparently get the office boy to knock up a
'Consultation Paper'?

I am about to get writing!

What tangible evidence exists that a self loading or pump action shotgun,
that is legal on a shotgun cert is any more dangerous than a traditional OU
or SS?? This seems as though its another misinformed view that is coloured
by perception from watching to many movies!

Who the hell is the 'subject matter expert' advising the govt?

I personally think this is a great chance for every UK gun owner to have
his or her own say and a poke at the powers that be.
I don’t think gun owners have ever had the real chance to stand up and
be counted, well chaps here it is!
I’ve printed several copies of the paper and passed them on to friends
who don’t have net access, I think it’s important that everyone of us
has some input into this debate, even if it’s just one point on one
topic. You can bet your bottom dollar every reply will be carefully
logged as “pro” or “anti”, statistics will be drawn and conclusions
made.
Do I think that it’s going to make a difference? I certainly do. This is
going to be the mother of attacks on our freedom, this time next year we
could see clubs close, clay shoots gone, game shooters in despair,
licences lost, air gunners swinging golf clubs and a totally un-workable
and unjust firearms licensing system. Do I think we can make a
difference? I certainly do but sadly most of us will roll over and think
of England as the government shafts us one more time.

Here's a point that I think some of us are perhaps missing - they have
started the consultation on an additional control basis, but don't
think you can't suggest some common sense ideas!
I'm sure someone mentioned having .17hmr self-loading for example.
I doubt that they'll bite for RKBA (probably be filed in the "round
filing cabinet) but more moderate ideas are worth airing.

Indeed.

There is a chance to put forward views on the revision of the FAC & SGC
licensing system.
It seems to me that the government is hitting shotguns hard and the die
hard clay and game shooters really need to start to think abut the
future of the sports.
It’s funny, not so long ago, clay organisations urged their members not
to march in London, and do they regret it now?

And you're 11 days behind the other shooting groups. Time to put pen to
paper, and do something. The Home office website has already closed the
e-mail address, to air your views. So write to you MP,but be
constrained, point out that you have a right to enjoy your sport, free
from hindrance, but would support anything that would reduce the illegal
use of firearms. Time for ALL of us to show a united front.

Flipping heck Joe, tell it like it is!
Pete was only trying to help and if it wasn’t for his post I for one
wouldn’t have ever known the document existed.

I wasn't knocking Pete or anyone John..The paper appeared on
uk.politics.guns over 11 days ago,a week before the Shooting Times
published it, with a link to the home office web-site, there was a e
mail address to take the comments of shooters, but it has now closed..I
know you guys don't like to get involved with abuse from the gun control
Nazi's, on the other group, but it would pay to just lurk on
uk.politics.guns.
Once again I apologise if you thought I was having a go at anyone.
Cheers

No problem Joe.

You know us country boys are six months behind everyone else :)

It is a sad fact that _some_ people can not understand that game
shooting and gun politics are like fish and chips. I guess it’s the fact
that any discussion on the subject inevitable turns into a revolving
argument. Although this time we are faced with a mighty big problem. The
government has published this paper on the guise of a consultation
questionnaire. We have seen the government totally ignore their own
firearms committee; it’s plainly obvious that the questions asked in the
paper are the government future plans for the shooting community.
