NO ICONS OR TASKBAR

Hey so I got this computer where when I boot up it gets past all the load up and stuff but there are NO ICONS or taskbar on the screen?!! I can still run programs indirectly by using the win 2000 taskmanager which you bring up with the Ctrl-Alt-Delete but its really annoying trying to use the computer from the Task Manager for everything. Anyone had any similar problems before? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks ahead of time.

what happens when you run explorer.exe from the task manager? do they come back?
