Ok heres the deal. I have put a system together with spare parts.
Asus A7V
Athlon T-Bird 800
2 sticks of 128 megs ram - 133
Maxtor HD
GeForce 2 GTS
SB Live
First the MB would not recognize the HD. Moved some jumpers and now it does. All day long it would not get as far a being able to boot from CD. It sat overnight, then it let me. I formated HD and installed WIN XP. After install it goes to reboot, and goes to the windows xp loading screen (not in XP yet), and then when it goes to xp, the screen just goes blank.
Some times it will not even go to the xp loading screen. It may lock up before that.
I am usually (not always) able to get it up in Safe mode. I have played with bios, and can not get to boot!
Best guess is the hdd is fault. Try runing the Maxtor hdd utility ( u can get it from their site) to see if everything checks ok. Had a friend with the same problem. It has something to do with the overheating of the hdd. SO if u let it rest and cool for a while it starts but the the overheating gets to it again. Also, because of this sometimes the modo doesn't recognize the hdd.
...Thats not my experience at all.. With my work as technical support, I have seen this many times. I also have seen disabled devices cause of shared irq's, but mostly, I have got bluescreens at boot cause of it.
I got alot of bluescreens in win98 and Me because of irq's. But not in Xp. But if u say u had this kind of problems, u must be right. But I still stick with the fact that is the hdd . Another posibility could be the Ram, but usually, in my experience, when it locks, it locks for good.
