What is the best Linux for a Laptop, for a Linux beginner who just wants to be able to browse the web, listen to music watch videos and have some basic office applications ?

I enjoyed Ubuntu at least when it came to the basics you list here. I still keep it installed on a memory stick. Its a really nice customizable OS with as easy as it gets on linux GUI IMO anyways. It can be loaded on a cd or a USB stick to try out as well. No need to install it before trying it. Likely true for other flavors but Ubuntu is still my fav linux.

Hello Uther39;

Ubuntu Desktop Edition is probably your best bet.
If you're already running Windows you can use Ubuntu's Windows installer to run Ubuntu alongside your current OS in a dual boot mode.

Ubuntu Netbook is also worth a look for something slightly different in a lightweight fast OS.

Cheers for the replies gents, its for a laptop im buying cheap that has no OS installed, so i reckon i will try ubuntu for desktop, again thankyou for the prompt replies.
