I've read a couple of times where they really don't do all that much for heat syncing, but they seem like a great aid in the prevention of busting a CPU when you reef down on that heat sync clip.

I'va also heard several tales of overheating caused by the shim being just a FRACTION to thick and causing the heatsink not to have sufficient contatc with the cpu core, as for the material its made of, it shouldnt make any difference as the shim is only used to help prevent damage to the core- it doesnt transfer heat. I personally wouldnt bother with one, if your careful fitting the heatsink there shouldnt be a problem.

The shim is not the problem, its AMD's inability to maintain a consistant core height. So it doesnt matter what shim you use, chances are its gonna mess up either by being too short and you crack your core or its too tall and the HSF will not touch the core.

GL, cause you gonna need it.
