I use Backupman and Cardbackup to backup my T3 onto an SD card. Neither of
them seem to have any password protection system for a restore, so even if
used a locking system to lock my palm (eg with Teal Lock), all my data could
be put onto the same palm with a hard reset and a data restore.
Have I got that right?

I don't know anything about Cardbackup. Backupman doesn't offer secure
backups, that's why I don't use it to backup to the card I keep in my
handheld. I only use it to backup to a card that stays in the office when I
go home at night.
For secure (encrypted) backups, I use BackupBuddyVFS. TealBackup also offers
such backups, but it's so awfully slow, it's not worth it at all.

I keep any data I want secure in SplashID. The data is encrypted, and just
doing a normal sync backs up the already encrypted data. Of course, this
won't work if you need everything encrypted, but if all you are concerened
abouyt are id/passwords and a few other bits, this works great.

True. One more reason I don't trust sensitive data to be anywhere
unencrypted. I use Keyring, Cryptopad, and Secret! to keep data
encrypted, so the backup only backs up data that is already encrypted.
If I need to encrypt individual fields in individual databases, CCrypt
does that.
I don't want or need encrypted backups, because there is nothing on my
Palm in plain text that I worry about anyone else having. If it's
sensitive, it's already encrypted, on the Palm, on the card, and on the
PC.

Check out mEncryptor from Toysoft (www.toysoft.ca) - it's under products /
security. I simply do a backup and then encrypt it. It takes awhile to do
but I feel much happier knowing that all the data is encrypted, even though
all sensitive data is kept with Keyring and not a plain text anyway.

Are you sure the data will be freely available? Both my recent T3 and
now the T5 require a reset after restore and return to the backed up
state, eg. locked up and asking for a password.
