Hi,

Just bought a used DELL "Latitude CPx" that my wife's company was selling
off. It has an internal 3.5" floppy and an external 24x CD-ROM Module
(hooking up to the parallel port). Before selling it, they formatted the
HD. Now I'm trying to install an operating system but I'm running into a
problem:

- I was able to install DOS from a boot disk as I have always done on my
desktop, but the system doesn't recognize the CD-ROM drive so that's as far
as I've gotten so far.

Is there something special I have to do for the system to recognize this
external drive? I don't even know what drive letter the system would assign
to it.

Thanks,
Ron

Hi Ron,

You need to install card services, CDROM driver and MSCDEX.

Ron,
I've also had similar things happen with external devices on the
parallel port! My first assumption is that after they formatted
the HD before giveing you the laptop, they probably killed the drivers
for your external CDR. Go back to you company and ask them if at least
they can give you the CDR drivers and try running them from dos in order
to get a drive letter assigned to the CDR so you can use it for
installing anything that comes on a CD-R disk.

Hi Ron,

Just re-read your post. You do NOT need card services. You do though
need the driver for the CDROM. You should be able to download it from
the manufacturers web site.

The driver should be loaded in config.sys and MSCDEX should be loaded
in autoexec.bat.
