I noticed SP1 has included the option to remove MS Messenger from the list of Windows components. I did this instead of doing it manually like I used to. It uninstalled according to Windows, but it's still there and runs every time I open Outlook Express. WTF? Now how do I get rid of it?

Register or log in to remove.

Click start menu, chose RUN

-- in the run prompt paste this command line and hit enter

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

XP may display an error, hit OK and ignore it. Upon restart Windows messenger should be gone. Note: This doesn't affect msn messenger.

Are we talking about the IM program or Messenger Service? I want the IM gone!

yea the IM service called "Windows Messenger" in XP. Which was basically a redone version of MSN Messenger 4.x. I've upgraded to MSN messenger 5, much better and somehow less annoying..

anyhow, the tip I gave above will remove windows messenger for good, I had meant that if you installed msn messenger seperately that the remove trick wouldn't affect it.
