Official word has finally come out on Microsoft's website and there are a few other independent reports on Vista..
Surprisingly.. it looks very complicated, almost like a copy of Mac OS X in some ways, but.. it might be a bigger breakthrough that XP was thought to be..
<A HREF="http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsvista/evaluate/keyreas.mspx" target="_new">Microsoft's Vista Key Areas</A>
Two major factors with Vista.. organization and (what I had been saying would be one of the major updates--> ) Security. Being able to organize your stuff and have a folder for commonly searched things (yay.. oh the excitement).
But Security improvements that Linux/Unix/Mac had long ago, and then some.
When installing programs you're not aware of, like on the internet, you'll be prompted to put in your adminsitrator password to install. This will prevent spyware/adware from getting installed without a user just click Yes.
Security will be more personalized and be a lot more scalable along with easier to use.
Admin users won't run apps with admin priviledges, rights will adjust to what the program needs so it can't have free reign on your computer.
You no longer need to be a local admin to use some applications with a standard, user level account. Nice!
An improved firewall to block incoming and OUTgoing? That'll be nice to see.. if it indeed works the first round.
Windows Vista is built with inter-dependent modules, which makes it easier to customize Windows Vista (to a certain degree) to your needs. Modularization also simplifies adding device drivers, testing and installing updates, and adding languages.
(Kind of like Legos or a modular house (but nicer I hope).)
Windows Imaging Format for us techies at work. This is going to be awesome, it's a stepped up version of RIS which has been standard since 2k. Easier to update and slipstream patches into. That'll be a big benefit.
It's also stating applications and windows will work faster and better than even that of XP.. that'll be a sight to see.
The other best part I saw was the Realiabilty section. It'll restart services causing problems, keep known areas from degrading system performance.
It's starting to sound like Microsoft has a good platform (starting with XP) and now they're getting around to fine tuning it to make it work better. It's about time.
But I guess it's going to be more colorful and cheesier looking that XP. More like a Mac..
CNN has a post from one of their authors who worked with someone on doing a quick review on it. It's a decent article but it's very dumbed down.

I'm guessing it's more of a skeleton frame of XP with new meat added. The coding in XP is good.. I think they just refined it and made all the tweaks that only they could do in the coding.
I think Vista will be worthwhile in the end though. I'm looking forward to the windows imaging and enhanced security.. then again, I'm pushing to be more of a security IT person, so just something else to chalk up on a resume.
SHould run it with VMware! thats what im going to do when I have time. I just dont expect much from beta1...beta2 si when it starts getting intersting to play with!
And the 1st viruses are starting to appear =), virtual seams intersting hehe
I find it odd that they bothered making an XP64 system... unless they were truly out there trying to help AMD out over intel.
Anyhow.. now I have to worry about learning XP64's features and how it effects things.. what real changes were made and how it effects the computer.. then I have to Vista..
Microsoft doesn't make it easy for tech people to keep up with them.. heh.
Intel has been 64-bit for workstation/servers and is now putting 64-bit into its desktops and soon to notebooks.
Was it not Intel first to release 64-bit Xeon before AMD?

That I honestly don't know.. I think Intel had 64bit capable processors for a long time, but they weren't activated.. something was wrong or something.
But AMD is driving the market, not Intel.. or at least that's how I see all the marketing for XP64 and AMD. I really haven't seen much on Intel's 64bit. Turion maybe.. but even then, they're not pushing it for some reason which is giving AMD a huge upper hand in my opinion.
Just like XP, you could go back to classic view.. I'm sure that'll be builtin so it'll perform well on low end systems.. those 299 dells with 256 memory might need something with less intensive graphics. I switched back to classic on everything except the task bar. The green button grew on me with the blue task bar.
Evil Curvy-primary-coloured-button lover! die die die!!!
Hehe. Although I do find <i>any</i> stuff to do with pretty borders, 'smooth scrolling', menus 'fading' in and out etc all completely pointless. I want the OS to run the stuff I'm interested in, not <i>be</i> the thing I'm interested in.... And turning off all that crap helps me do that just that little bit more quickly...

I am hopefull 64-bit is faster and uses more RAM effeciently.
That is worth it for me.

Well then upgrade your PII 450 and it'll run good. haha
I didn't notice much difference in the performance and memory usuage when I switched it around. The classic task bar seemed really small at high resolutions. I have a couple things turned off that I don't really need.. like fading and stuff. But I don't do anything that requires intensive stuff.. yet.
I just play BF2 and research stuff on it.. I have a couple other computers I'll need to be picky with though.
