I have a Dell Dimension 4400. I am unable to record data files to my CD. I
bought the PC with a CD-RW.
Start-My Computer-CD drive shows as the name: 'CD Drive (D:)' and a cd-r
icon is what it's showing is in there. (My blank Maxell CD-R.)
Right click on cd-r icon.
Click on properties. 5 tabs show up for CD Drive (D:) Properties:
General
Autoplay
Hardware
Settings
Direct CD 5.0 Options.

There is no recording tab as suggested by Microsoft KB.
In the Dell Help and Support Center (Accessories-System Tools-System
Information) under system configuration of your Dell Computer subtitle:
Hardware Information about your Dell Computer it states the following:
Cd-Rom Drive (D:)
Manufacturer: (Standard CD-ROM drives)
Model: LITE-ON LTR-24102M
Driver: cdrom.sys

Under Device Manager I see the following drivers:
All under C:\\WINDOWS\System32:
drivers\Cdr4_xp.sys
drivers\Cdralw2k.sys
DRIVERS\cdrom.sys <----This driver has a yellow check mark icon to it's
left
DRIVERS\imapi.sys <----This driver also has a yellow check mark.
drivers\ImapiRox.sys
drivers\MxlW2k.sys
drivers\pwd_2k.sys
DRIVERS\redbook.sys <--Has the yellow checkmark
storprop.dll <--Has the yellow checkmark

Provider Roxio File version 5.10 (103)

Also under My Computer-CD-Properties-Settings, it shows Type:CD-RW drive
Firmware revision 4DS2.

This seems to indicate to me that there is a wrong driver and my cd-rw is
being detected as a CD-ROM only.
When I insert the CD it seems to spin for quite a while and then doing
nothing when I try to add files.
How can I correct this problem?

It's normal for it to use the CD-ROM driver. It is not normal to have yellow
splats.

Delete the CD drive and let Windows rediscover it.
