I do and its fun everyone should do it. Actually I was just wondering. Im on a duron 750@1gigand my last pc was a celery 600@900 and the one before that was a p3 650@866.

When I go into a computer store I lose all means of reason for some reason.

I do when I can. Many companies will buy name brand boxes. Our local beige box builder likes using Intel motherboards unless I demand otherwise, Like the Asus P4T I got and tweeked up the FSB on. I pay a little more for the MB and less for the CPU, and have to go into the BIOS in order to recoup the extra cost. Too much trouble in most cases - even just getting CL2 is a pain to get as a special. A simpler route is just ordering an Athlon based system to get cost savings without tweaking, and many companies can't cope with even that.
