My local computer store is advertising the Athlon xp Palomino at 1.6g and 1.8g to be due out on Oct9. Is the XP the succesor to the Thunderbird or is it for servers? If it is not for servers could someone please tell me the name of the current AMD cpu for servers. Also will the XP fit if my current Socket A motherboard? So if i wanted to upgrade all I would need is the CPU.
Sorry for the basic questions i'm just trying to figure this out.
Thanks for any input

Not from what I have heard on the boards and at ars, athlon xp is the name they are giving the desktop athlon palomino, they are releasing 1.53ghz athlonMP chips 3 days before the supposed release of the athlon xp. Which would lead me to believe that xp is not in fact the next athlonmp.

Athlon XP is the same as Athlon 4 (Palamino).

AMD will be using model numbers instead of GHz to show the performance of thier processors. The model structure is given below:

XP Clock Speed Model Number
-------------- --------------
1.333GHz = 1500+
1.400GHz = 1600+
1.467GHz = 1700+
1.500GHz = 1800+
1.600GHz = 1900+
