Im planning on getting the Msi Gx660r Gaming laptop in which comes in different versions the two ones i am considering is the i5 460m cpu or the i7 740qm cpu. Which would the i7 make much difference in gaming performance aswell as other computing tasks. And is it worthwhile spending a little more for the i7 version.

I'd strongly recommend getting a sandy bridge powered laptop because they're notably faster and will provide better battery life as well.
But if the choice is only between the 2 laptops you posted, then I'd go with 740qm because some games(mostly RTS) and tasks like image/video editing benefit from a quad core CPU
