Intel warns of sales/staff imbalance

Apparently to the tune of 20,000 employees!

Will they wait until next year to issue the 20,000 additional pink slips (20%? of their workforce?) or will they start issuing them sooner?

They are already in the process of eliminating 5,000 jobs. This 20,000 imbalance is in addition to the current 5k cuts.

And while were on the subject, what about the IA-64? Is it just me or is the design hugely inferior to x86-64?

This is not really a big deal, as Intel has billions of dollars in the bank. As noted by Craig Barrett, "If the economy and our business begin to recover in 2002, then I believe we can make it through these difficult times without any corporatewide actions." This is a great deal of latitude.
