i have recently purchased an amd athlon thunderbird 1ghz cpu,and on toms how to guid i saw that it said that some amd procesors are either l1 locked or unlocked and that you would have to use the tip of a pecil to lock it. the one i have does not have l1 crossed off.. if i cross it off will the do anything to the cpu?.

Please be a little more clear. Connecting the L1 bridges unlocks the CPU.

i am a newbie to overclocking,i just got a asusa7a motherboard and a athlon 1g cpu,i may want to overclock in the future and heard that you had to unlock the L1 bridge would that be the only one i have to unlock if i want to get the cpu up to 1.2g .. and do i need a speacial pencil to connect the bridges? (i'm looking at my cpu now and there are now cuts in any of the little gold lines they are all conecting does this mean its already unlocked and i dont need to do anything to the bridges to overclock?) thanks for you advice... i really need the help,im a newbie...hehe

Well no offecne we can tell your a newbie by the post :)

Ok, now, on the Processor...where it says L1....there should be 4 bridges....

Do they look like this : : : :

OR do they look like this

it could be a mix between the 2 I believe....

ALSO on the DIE (center part of the processor) does it say

AXIA at the beginning of the 2nd line....
or
AHYJA at the beginning of the 2nd line....

whats the arrangement ??

becasue if you go to
www.AthlonOC.com you can see what the rated average overclock of your processor will be...... =)

Anyways, to unlock your processor, the L1 bridges MUST look like this

all you need is a regular sharp HB pencil, i personalyl find that a mechanical pencil workx the best.......make sure you pencil them in good.....and your done, than all you have to do is chaneg the multiplier.....AND BTW, dependign on what CORE steppign your 1GHz Athlon is, you might be able to hit 1.5 - 1.6 GHz... =)

Godo Luck....

Also screwing it up cant hurt the processor, if it wont boot simply wipe away the lead and try again.
