LMAO, All I can say is good luck. Ill laugh even harder when you come back asking "HELP! why is my new PC..."
Buy Intel and save yourself the aggravation of guessing if its gonna work correctly or not, let alone worring about if its gonna overheat on you (disreguard the crashing, thats normal).
I would personally ditch Windows XP. It's login system is quite queer, especially for tweakers, and overall many people seem to be having problems with it. Take Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2 installed. I love it, personally. Besides, unless you are going budget, you will have better programs for all of Windows XP's built in ones, and Windows 2000 will suit you better for it.
Unless you are a power user, ditch SCSI. Extra cost, unless you are going to setup more than 4 drives.
Try bagging a slightly bigger PSU. If you are going to upgrade in the future, it will be good "insurance" in making sure your system will stay stable.
Wait a few days and buy one of the new 1.53GHz Athlons, under 1.8GHz AthlonXP name. Much better than any plain equal Tbird.
Yes, it will be an excellent system. However, I have a few suggestions. I'd suggest you prepare for the future and get a DVD drive. Once DVDs are on the majority of home PC, you'll start seeing a lot of DVD software. I don't see that happening anytime soon but it will happen so you might as well get a DVD drive; you won't pay much extra. Get the 40GB IDE drive but make sure it's 7200 RPM. To bee on the safe side, i'd suggest at least a 350W power supply. If you haven't already gotten that GeForce2 Ultra, wait for the GeForce3 Ti200 and get that. It will only cost slightly more but you'll get better performance in future games. Also, SBLives are notorious for popping and cracking on any system, even ones without the 686B southbridge. I suggest the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz or Phillips Acoustic Edge for roughly the same price.
AMD technology + Intel technology = Intel/AMD Pentathlon IV; the ULTIMATE PC processor
Actually, the popping and so on has only been on 686B based computers.
DVD is a good idea, but is he really gonna need it? I mean, come on, not too many people watch DVD's on their system (I do though). And I don't see the PC becoming the main home entertainment system for a while. DVD software is next to nonexistant; prices for DVD's are more expensive apiece.
I am running windows xp , dont ask how, and it is the best os I have ever had the pleasure of using, I personally would suggest everyone upgrade to it.
