p3/133Mhz on 100Mhz System

I just want to verify that it is okay to run P3/133Mhz processors on a 100MHz bus system. I am looking at upgrading the processors in a few servers that will accept up to P3 550 w/ 100Mhz. I have a bead on some processors but they are P3-600/133. They should work, shouldn't they?

that would depend on the motherboard and bios revision.
the 550 is a katmai cor ,2.2 volt. The 600 is a coppermine core 1.65 to 1.75 volts depending on stepping.
If you could post what motherboard you are using,we can get a definate answer.

I aint signing nothing!!!

Note that even if it did work with a 100MHz external clock (100MHz FSB), a locked processor designed to run on a 133MHz external clock (133MHz FSB) would work at 75% of its rated speed.

all 133 MHz chips are either FCPGA or FCPGA2, make sure your board supports it (like i810 will support FCPGA but not FCPGA2).

plus, your system will run at 75% of the speed as rayston pointed out, the multiplier is locked and bus is lowered.

not worth it, get a new board.

Too many factors to list. To begin with, there were TWO 600's with 133MHz FSB: The 600B and the 600EB. The 600EB was also avialable in both Slot 1 (SECC2) and Socket 370 (FC-PGA).
Now if you get the older, more expensive, slower working 600B, your fine, except that it would only run at 450, unless your board supports a change to 133MHz FSB. Which slows you down!
Now for more problems-if it's a 600EB, your motherboard may or may not work with it, depending on whether or not it supports Coppermine processors. If it does, you'll still be limmited to 450MHz UNLESS your motherboard also supports a 133Mhz FSB.
Now for even more problems-If it's a Coppermine, Slot 1 will require a new SECC2 style cooler. And FC-PGA will require a converter card PLUS an new cooler.
So why didn't you make it easy on us and tell us what motherboard these things are supposed to go on?

Back to you Tom...

yes, i saw it on the Intel site but it wasnt available in India.

there are versions of 533B and 600B processors with 512k half speed cache and with 133 MHz FSB avaiable in slot 1 package (thats obvious for off-chip cache). but never saw it in India. how is/was its availability in the US?
